Justianus or Justinianus, Bishop of Vercelli in Italy (S.)

Those who have published Catalogues of the Bishops of Vercelli honor this Bishop with the title of Saint, the first of whom may be considered John Stephen Ferrerius, Bishop of Vercelli, who designates him the seventh Bishop in these words: Saint Justianus or Justinianus, as is read in a manuscript codex of the Vatican library, Bishop, distinguished in the Council of Milan held under Archbishop Eusebius in the year of the Lord 451, against the Eutychian heresy. The same things, with the phrasing little altered, are read in Ferdinand Ughelli, volume 4 of Sacred Italy, and Francis Augustine ab Ecclesia, Bishop of Saluzzo, in the Chronological History of the Piedmont region, chapter 10. There exists a Synodical letter of the Council of Milan to Pope Saint Leo, reported among his letters as number 52, in which this Bishop subscribes thus: I, Justinianus, Bishop of the Church of Vercelli, have consented to and subscribed to all the above, pronouncing anathema on those who have held impious views concerning the sacrament of the Lord's Incarnation. Philip Ferrarius, in the General Catalogue of Saints, which he wrote as Professor at the University of Pavia, under the twenty-first of March, has this: At Vercelli, of Saint Justianus, Bishop of that city. In the Notes he adds, from the records of the Church of Vercelli, that he is invoked as a Saint in the Litanies.
