ON SAINT BLANDINUS,

IN THE TERRITORY OF GALLIC MEAUX.

Commentary

Blandinus, in the territory of Gallic Meaux (S.)

G. H.

Andreas Saussay, in the Supplement of the Gallican Martyrology, when he had treated of St. Justus or Justinus of Bigorra, subjoins these things: In the territory of Meaux of St. Blandinus, likewise a Confessor, who in the church of his name, situated in a district also named from his tutelage, rests, and is venerated with a frequent concourse of the faithful. In the register of the benefices of the diocese of Meaux is indicated a Chapel of St. Blandinus in the Deanery of Crécy; and by others it is said, that from the town of Crécy the district of St. Blandinus is distant seven Gallic leagues: others place the same between Crécy and Faremoutiers. His more ancient memory is in the Carmelite MS. preserved at Cologne, formerly described from the use of the Church of Troyes: likewise in the MS. Florary and Martyrology printed at Cologne and Lübeck in the year 1490: in Greven also, Canisius, and Ferrarius everywhere with these words: In the district, or territory of Meaux of St. Blandinus the Confessor. In the Breviary of Meaux printed in the year 1640 is prescribed a Commemoration of St. Blandinus the Confessor on the following day May 11, and all things of the Common of a Confessor not Pontiff are recited. Thus far concerning this Saint we have been able to know nothing else: nor did the Great Vicar of the church of Meaux Lord C. Pastel, after a diligent inquiry made in the place itself at the instance of our Paris brethren, find anything whereby this Saint could be rendered more known.

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
