ON SS. DEMETRIUS, ATTICUS, TADDEUS,

MARTYRS IN ASIA.

Commentary

Demetrius, Martyr in Asia (S.)

Atticus, Martyr in Asia (S.)

Taddeus, Martyr in Asia (S.)

G. H.

The Epternach copy of the Hieronymian Martyrology adds these three Martyrs to those reported above: In Asia of Saints Dimetrius, Atticus, Tadheus. But three other apographs of the same Martyrology, Memory in the calendars. with Atticus omitted, have thus: In Asia the birthday of Saints Demetrius, Taddeus. Almost the same things are read in the double MS. Trier of S. Maximinus: also in MS. Florarium and in MS. Liège of the Laurentian monastery, and also in Notker. In MSS. Richenovian and Rhinovian is mentioned in Asia Demetrius: who, with the arena not indicated, is named in MSS. Casinensian and Parisian of Labbé, known also under the name of Trimetrius in the Augustan of S. Udalric: but Demetrius the great is called in MS. Usuard, by which epithet would be signified that one who to Greeks and Latins most celebrated, the Proconsul of Thessalonica is venerated by these on VIII, by those on XXVI October. In Greven's Auctary to Usuard he is called Demetriaticus: which name from Demetrius and Atticus, badly conjoined, we judge to have emerged. In MS. Hibernian of the monastery of Tamlacht are indicated the names of Dimetrius and Atticus: and the latter's name is repeated a second time. cult of S. Demetrius in the diocese of Novara, Charles a Basilica Petri, Bishop of Novara, in book 1 History of Novara page 184, relates that in the church of S. Julius is venerated on XI May, Demetrius the Martyr, and to him there was an altar dedicated; about whose translation however what to refer, he had not. It is credible that some one was brought from the Roman crypts, to whom this day was merely arbitrarily dedicated. About S. Julius the Presbyter, from whose name the said church in the diocese of Novara at the place Verbano was called, we treated on XXXI January.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
