[1] The ancient apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology take their beginning from these holy Martyrs for the day, & the most ancient indeed the Epternac one thus: XV Kalends of June at Alexandria of Patamon the Presbyter, Ortasius, Serapion the Presbyter, Pantherus, Dioscorus, Palmus, Petegondus the Deacon, Cenronus, Dativus, Lucius & Maxima, Hermon the Lector, & of IV others. In the number of Martyrs other apographs of the same Martyrology agree, yet with some difference: for Patamon is called in the Lucca one Pantamon, & in place of Ortasius in others is Hortasius & Hortasi, & that Presbyter in the Lucca & Blume one; & in place of Petegondus is written Petecon & Pentecon; & for Cenronus also Cerron in the said two, is had. The excellent MS. of the Queen of Sweden, esteemed by Holstenius, indicates the same number, but with few named, in these words: At Alexandria the Birthday of SS. Pantamion, Ostasius & Serapion Presbyters with thirteen others. With the same ending of those thirteen Notkerus has it. But Rabanus, Pope Marcus being interposed, writes these things. XV Kalends of Hortasius & Sercipion the Presbyter, & of Marcus the Pope, & of Potamion. Whether Marcus is to be joined. Which plainly the same things are translated into the Martyrology published under the name of Bede: by which cited there is treated in today's Roman Martyrology of Potamion Bishop of Heraclea in Egypt, under Constantius having attained the palm of martyrdom: of whom we also will treat below. But who is that Marcus the Pope? Whether the Roman, who is venerated on VII October, or rather, who in the Auctarium of Greven on Usuard is surnamed Bishop & Martyr, & is called Evangelist in the MSS. Augsburg, Labbe, & Tamlacht ones? If so: there is to be understood St. Marcus the Evangelist, Bishop of Alexandria
& Martyr, by whom others were converted to the faith. Of this one we treated XXV April. Of the same Alexandrian Martyrs, at least of various, mention is made in the MSS. Aachen, Reichenau, Rheinau, Barberini, Vatican of St. Peter, Arras, Tournai, Trier of St. Maximin, Augsburg & Labbe, Tamlacht with the Auctarium of Greven on Usuard, & in some is named Maximus, who above is Maxima: & Hortasius also is called Presbyter in various.
