We proceed with the apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology, & in the most ancient of these the Epternac one we read these things: At Constantinople of Euchus, Serapion, Bustasius the Presbyter, Patamon, Pantherus, Peteglonus, Dierantus the Lector, Dativus, Marcianus, Luciosa, Locana, Egena. The same all are had in other codices of the same Martyrology; but in place of Euchus, is read Effuchus, Effucus & Eseichus: & for Peteglonus, is Peteclandus & Petedondus; as also for Dierantus, is had Eran & Æram. In the same manner in place of Luciosa & Locana in the other three is Luciosus & Luciana. Finally Egena is written Egina & Ægina. Of these some in other Martyrologies are found. In the MS. Roman one of Cardinal Barberini, the Trier one of St. Maximin, & the Liège one of St. Lambert these things are read: At Constantinople, of Dativus, Luciosus, Marcianus. The same, the arena not being indicated, are mentioned in the MS. Prague one. So also in the MS. Augsburg one of St. Udalric mention is made of Dativus, Ortasius, Luciosus; but in the MS. Paris one of Labbe are written Dativus, Hortasius, Luciosa. In the MS. Hibernian Tamlacht one are indicated the names of Bostasius, Potamon, Pontinus, Pedecladus, Dativus, Marcianus, Luciosus, Luciana, & Agna for Ægina. Of the very many Martyrs crowned at Byzantium, & then ascribed by the common phrase to Constantinople, it was treated on day VIII of this month of May. Notker has these things: At Constantinople of Hesichius & Eustachius. They seem put in place of Euchus or Effuchus & Bustasius: & indeed (if you regard reason alone) much more rightly; since those names are truly Greek, but expressed in the Martyrologies most of them seem corrupt: yet in reporting proper names we do not willingly depart from the consensus of the older MSS.

ON THE HOLY MARTYRS

CASSIUS, VICTOR, JULIANUS, AND LUCEGIA THE VIRGIN.

From MS. Martyrologies.

Commentary

Cassius, Martyr (St.)

Victor, Martyr (St.)

Julianus, Martyr (St.)

Lucegia, Virgin (St.)

G. H.

The two former Martyrs are reported in the apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology, likewise in the MSS. Barberini, Prague, Augsburg of St. Udalric, Trier of St. Maximin, Liège of St. Laurence, Paris of Labbe, & Tamlacht. The former Cassius, also Cassus & Casius is written; but in the MS. Corbie one printed at Paris is added Julianus. In the MS. Ado one of the Liège monastery of St. Laurence, after the Constantinopolitans reported, is read: And elsewhere of Cassius & Victor, likewise of Lucegia the Virgin. Which are also thus written in the MS. Florarium: Likewise SS. Cassius & Victor, also of holy Lucegia the Virgin. Whether this one also was a Martyr & suffered with the others, is not clear.
