[1] Four ancient transcripts of the Hieronymian Martyrology note this day thus: XIII Kalends of June. In Africa the birthday of the holy women Victoria, Marcellosa, Salsa. But in place of Marcellosa, or Marcelosa, in the Lucca MS. is read Marcellona. The same things which are had in the said transcripts we copied at Naples from the Patrician MS., kept among the books of Caraccioli with the Clerks Regular: and we found the same at Rome in the ancient codex of Cardinal Barberini: but in place of Salsa was written Falsa, in whose place in the Florarium MS. is had Saturnina, of whom we shall treat below. But, Salsa omitted, the rest are read in the Ado MS. of the Queen of Sweden, and in the Corbie and the Liège MSS. of St. Lambert: in this last, however, Victor, not Victoria, is written. Africa being omitted, the same three are treated in the MSS. of Trier of St. Maximinus, and another of the Church of Prague: likewise in the Tamlacht and the Paris MS. of Labbe: but of Victoria alone in the Augsburg, Reichenau and Rheinau MSS. To her in the Supplement of Grevenus to Usuard is added Marcellus, in place of Marcellosa: so also in the Aachen MS. is read: In Africa of Marcellus, Basilea, and in the Ado MS. of St. Lawrence among the Liège folk, and the older Trier MS. of St. Maximinus, In Africa of Victoria, Basilissa. Of St. Basilla, who is also called Basilissa, we shall presently treat.
