ON THE HOLY AFRICAN MARTYRS

VICTUS, MAURELLA, QUINTUS, PRIMULUS, SALUSTIUS, FORTUNATUS, MIRELLA, PRIMUS.

From the same Hieronymian Martyrology.

Commentary

Victus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Maurella, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Quintus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Primulus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Salustius, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Fortunatus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Mircella, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Primus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

G. H.

This class of Martyrs is proposed in the third place in the copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, nearly everywhere with these words: In Africa the natal day of SS. Victus, Maurella, Quintus, Primulus, Salustius, Fortunatus, Mirella, Primus. In the Corbeian copy printed at Paris the name of Victus is omitted. In the Epternacensian is Primulus, in the Blumianus Primolus: and in place of Mirella in the said Epternacensian is Marcella, in the Corbeian Nirilla. In the Blumianus is added the name Eutus, perhaps transferred hither from Polyeuctus to be referred to in the following class. The first six are also referred in the Mss. Vatican of S. Peter, Casinensian, Altempsian, Liège of S. Lambert, and the Auctarium of Greven to Usuard: likewise in the Mss. Barberinian and Trier of S. Maximinus: but in the second place is Marcella, in others Maurella. In the Ms. of Prague the place of contest Africa is omitted, and the first is called Vinctus. In the Ms. of Queen of Sweden cited by Holstenius these things are written: In Africa the natal day of SS. Victus, Marcella, Quintus, with five others: whom indeed we give by their names. In the Ms. Richenoviensian these are: In Africa the natal day of Victus, Maurella. The name of Victus is also in the Ms. Cologne of S. Mary ad Gradus. In the ancient Casinensian Ms. on the XXIII day of May, SS. Victus and Quintinus Martyrs are venerated, perhaps the latter here called Quintus.

ON SS. POLYEUCTUS, VICTORIUS, DONATUS, QUINTUS, LUCUSA,

MARTYRS AT CAESAREA IN CAPPADOCIA.

Likewise from the Hieronymian Martyrology.

Commentary

Polyeuctus, Martyr at Caesarea in Cappadocia (S.)

Victorius, Martyr at Caesarea in Cappadocia (S.)

Donatus, Martyr at Caesarea in Cappadocia (S.)

Quintus, Martyr at Caesarea in Cappadocia (S.)

Lucusa, Martyr at Caesarea in Cappadocia (S.)

BY THE AUTHOR G. H.

This class of five Martyrs also is referred in the ancient Martyrologies of S. Jerome: of which three are recalled by Ado and Notker with these words: At Caesarea of Cappadocia the natal day of SS. Polyeuctus, Victorius, Donatus. The same is read in today's Roman Martyrology, and others. But in the copies of Usuard, in place of Polyeuctus, is read Polioti, and Poliucti as also in the ancient Capuan Breviary and various manuscripts and printed Martyrologies. In the Ms. Aix-la-Chapelle are the names Eutus, Victor, Donatus: in the Ms. Cologne of S. Mary ad Gradus, Victorius, Donatus: in the Ms. Paris of Labbé Victurus, Donatus: in the Ms. Augustan of S. Udalric, Inchoatus, Veturus, Donatus. In the most ancient Epternacensian these things are had: In Caesarea of Cappadocia, the natal day of Polieuctus, Victor, Donatus, Quintus, Locusta. The last named is referred to in the last place, is missing in the Corbeian, and is written in the Lucensian and Blumianus Lucusa, but in the first place Policutus, instead of Polieutus. In the Blumianus there is moreover the name of Victoria

as is also read in the Ms. Lucensian Calendar. Again Polyeuctus or Polioctus, in Caesarea of Cappadocia, is referred on May XXII, in the same copies of S. Jerome and in the Appendix of Ado and others. Some relics of S. Victorius are kept at Bologna among the Conventual Franciscans, as Masini indicates at this day in his Bononia perlustrata; but that they are of this Cappadocian Saint would be difficult to prove. The day was assumed because Victorius was inscribed in the tables of the Roman Martyrology.

ON ST. TIMOTHY THE DEACON,

MARTYR IN BRITAIN.

From various Martyrologies.

Commentary

Timothy, Deacon Martyr in Britain (S.)

G. H.

This last is recounted in four copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, likewise in the Mss. Richenoviensian, Barberinian, and the other of the Queen of Sweden: where these things are had: In Britain the natal day of Timothy the Deacon. There is added in the other Corbeian Ms., And elsewhere of Timothy, whom we said above suffered in Mauritania. Hence one might rightly doubt whether Britannia has not been made out of Mauritania.
