ON STS. MARCELLUS AND CODRATUS OR CODRUS,

MARTYRS AMONG THE GREEKS.

From the same Ms. their Synaxaria.

Commentary

Marcellus, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)

Codratus, or Codrus, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)

G. H.

The very ancient Ms. Synaxarium of the Church of Constantinople joins these two with these words: Καὶ τῶν ἂγίων Μαρτύρων Μαρκέλλου καὶ Κοδράτου. But in the Ms. Menaea of Milan of the Ambrosian library thus they are proposed: Καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Μάρτυρος Μαρκέλλου καὶ Κοδράτου. The same things but at May XX are read in the double Menaea of Turin of the Duke of Savoy. With full distinction are referred both in the Ms. Menaea of Dijon of the Society of Jesus, and of the kind of martyrdom of S. Marcellus these things are read: Τῇ ἀυτῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ ἅγιος Μάρκελλος μόλυβδον ποτισθεὶς χακλάζοντα τελειοῦται. On the same day S. Marcellus, when molten lead as drink he had taken, to the end of his life came. And these verses are joined:

Μολύβδινον Μάρκελλος ἔμπυρον πόμα Οὕτως πίνων ἦν ὡσεί τις ὓδωρ πίνει,

Of melted lead the cups thus drank Marcellus, as another a draught of cold water.

Then these are subjoined: Ὁ ἅγιος μάρτυς Κόδρος ὑπὸ ἵππων συρόμενος τελειοῦταὶ. S. Martyr Codrus dragged by horses, consummates martyrdom. And this distich is added.

Ἱππηλατήσας, καὶ πόλου νύσσαν φθάσας Τὰς χεῖρας ἄιρεις, καὶ στεφος δέχῃ, Κόδρε.

Driving horses, having attained the goal of heaven, Stretch forth, Codrus, thy right hand and the palm receive.
