SKILLED IN MEDICINE AMONG THE GREEKS.

From their Ms. Synaxaria.

Commentary

Sophia, Martyr, skilled in Medicine, among the Greeks (S.)

G. H.

Several are venerated among the Greeks holy women, called Sophia, from whom we judge this one distinct: of whom make mention several Ms. Menaea, the Milanese of the Ambrosian library, and on May XX the Turin of the Duke of Savoy, likewise on this day the Ms. Synaxarium of the Church of Constantinople, with these words everywhere: Καὶ ἄθλησις τῆς ἁγίας Μάρτυρος Σοφίας τὴς ὶατρίνης. And the contest of the holy Martyr Sophia, the physician. The same I read in the Latin version of the Arabo-Egyptian Martyrology kept in our Maronite College at Rome. The kind of martyrdom is indicated in the Ms. Menaea which at Dijon likewise in the College of the Society of Jesus with Peter Francis Chifflet we found, while there we read. Ἡ ἁγία Σοφία ἡ ἰατρίνη ξίφει τελειοῦται. The holy Sophia the physician by the sword obtains the end of her life. And these verses are added.

Ιατρὸς ἔν πρὶν σωμάτων ἡ Σοφία Τμηθεῖσα γοῦν δείκνυται καὶ πνευμάτων.

Sophia formerly the physician of bodies, was made. The physician of souls, when she was cut down with the head.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
