ON THE HOLY SARDINIAN MARTYRS, SALUCIANUS, EUTRICUS BISHOP, CRESCENTINUS, TICIANUS, QUINTUS, SCIABILUS.
From the same Hieronymian Martyrology.
CommentarySalucianus, Martyr in Sardinia (S.)
Eutricus Bp. Martyr in Sardinia (S.)
Crescentinus, Martyr in Sardinia (S.)
Ticianus, Martyr in Sardinia (S.)
Quintus, Martyr in Sardinia (S.)
Sciabelus, Martyr in Sardinia (S.)
G. H.
In the fourth place these holy Martyrs
set forth the ancient copies of the Hieronymian
Martyrology, and with these
words almost: "In Sardinia of Salutianus,
Eutricus the Bishop, Crescentinus,
Ticianus, Quintus, Sciabilus."
The same has the old codex
of the Queen of Sweden, and from it Holstenius
in his Animadversions to the Roman Martyrology. In place of
Salucianus is also written Salutianus and Salustianus, and for
Eutricus is held in the Epternac one Eutropius: but he perhaps on the occasion
of S. Eutropius, Bishop of Orange, of whom below, is
there thus inserted. In the same Epternac one is then placed the word
"elsewhere," which in the other copies and codex of the Queen of Sweden is missing.
In place of Crescentinus and Ticianus is also written Criscentinus
and Titianus or Tychianus: and for Sciabilus, also
Stiabilus and Stabulus, who is missing in the said Epternac.
In the Mss. Casino and Roman of Duke Altempsius these
are had: "In Sardinia SS. Eutricus the Bishop, Crescentius,
Martianus." But this seems to be Martialis among the Martyrs
at Tomi referred above. With place of contest omitted Eutricus
the Bishop is in the Mss. Barberini, and Trier of S. Maximinus.
In the Augsburg Ms. of S. Ulrich are indicated the names
of Salvatianus, Eutricus, Quintus, Stabilus. The same are in
the Paris Ms. of Labbé, but the first name is more correctly written
Salutianus or Salustianus from the Aachen Ms.
Quintus is referred in the Auctary of Greven, and in Galesinius,
but mixed with others, as above is indicated. In the Calendar
of a most ancient Ms. Breviary, whose use was for the parts
of the Rhine, is also the memory of S. Salustianus the Martyr.
ON SS. ALYPIUS, EUBIOTUS, OR EUSEBIOTA, PAUL, AND JULIANA HIS SISTER,
MARTYRS AMONG THE GREEKS.
From the Mss. Synaxaria, especially the Dijon one.
CommentaryAlypius, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
Eubiotus or Eusebiotes, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
Paul, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
Juliana, Martyr among the Greeks (S.)
G. H.
The memory of these Martyrs is celebrated
among the Greeks in the Ms. Synaxarium
of the Constantinopolitan Church,
which pertains to the Clermont college
of the Society of Jesus
at Paris; likewise in the Mss. Menaea
of Cardinal Mazarin, and others
with the Dominican Fathers also
preserved at Paris; also in the Mss. Milan ones of the Ambrosian library,
and Turin ones of the Duke of Savoy, with these words
everywhere: "And of the holy Martyrs Alypius, Eubiotus,
Paul, and his sister Juliana." In the Mss. Menaea
preserved at Dijon with Peter Francis Chiflet of the Society
of Jesus, are mentioned the two former, and concerning the first
these are had. "Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ ὅσιος Ἀλύπιος λίθῳ τὴν κεφαλὴν συντριβεὶς τελειοῦται." On the same day the holy
Alypius, when his head was crushed with a stone,
ended his life. Then is added this distich.
"Τὸν εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας τιμῶν λίθον,
Λίθῳ κεφαλὴν, Ἀλύπιε, συντρίβῃ."
While you duly honour the stone placed at the head of the corner,
Alypius, with a stone your head is crushed.
Of the other these are read: "Τῇ αυτῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ ἅγιος Εὐσεβιώτης πυρὶ τελειοῦται." On the same day the holy Eusebiotes, by fire
burned, completes martyrdom; then is sung.
"Ἐυσεβιώτῃ προσδοκοῦντι τὰ στέφη,
Τὸ πυρπολοῦν πῦρ ὧς ἀέριος ἦν δρόσος."
To Eusebiotes, while he seeks crowns,
The devouring fire is turned into airy dew.
