AT GERUNDA IN HITHER SPAIN.
From ancient Martyrologies, especially S. Hieronymus.
CommentaryGaulienus, Martyr at Gerunda in Hither Spain (S.)
and the rest as listed above…G. H.
Old MS. Martyrologies, the Roman
of Cardinal Barberini,
the Trier of S. Maximinus, Memory of three in various fasti, the Liège
of the monastery of S. Lawrence under the name
of Ado, also the MS. Florarium
of Saints, and the Auctarium of Greven
to Usuard printed in 1515 and 1521,
some from these Martyrs
so report: In the city of Gerunda the birthday of SS.
Germanus, Victurus, Silvanus. The same has Petrus Canisius
in his Martyrology issued in German, and adds Gerunda
in Spain, as palaestra, not Emporia, which
is wrongly imposed on him by Ferrarius in the general Catalogue, where
he ascribes the same Martyrs to Gerunda: who also, but
with palaestra omitted, are reported in MS. of Prague. More companions
S. Notker adjoins in his Martyrology in these words. or also five, with many others, In
Spain in the city of Gerunda, of Germanus, Victurus, Sylvanus,
Telesphorus, Victorinus, and many others.
Notker is described by Tamayo Salazar in his Spanish
Martyrology, and celebrates them with this elogium: At Gerunda in Hither
Spain, of SS. Germanus, Victurus, Sylvanus, Telesphorus,
Victorinus, and many other Martyrs:
who for the faith of Christ through diverse contests
of torments came to the happy triumph of the crown.
[2] Those who here are cited as many other Martyrs, are indicated
in four ancient apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology,
but by the negligence of scribes in place of Gerunda was written,
Earumdem or Eorumdem, reported in the Martyrology of S. Hieronymus. and so in MS.
Blume is read: In the city of Earumdem (rather Gerunda) the birthday of SS. Gaulienus, Germanus, Victurus, Silvanus,
Telesphorus, Victorinus, Donatus, Stialiterti Rogatus,
likewise Germanus, likewise Silvanus, Honorius, Cicilia, Tertula,
Lautica, Victoria, Fortunatus, Maxima, Rogata,
Paulica, Agapia, Castula, Amella, likewise Tertula,
Lupus, Justus, Tecla. So there. In the Lucca apograph,
is said in the beginning, In the city of Eorumdem, which words
are missing in other apographs: and the Corbie one printed at Paris
begins from these words; The birthday of the Saints. But
these are missing in the Epternach, in which the first is called
Gallienus, who to others is Gaulienus: so for Victurus,
Telesphorus and Victorinus, is written Victor, Telisforus
or Thalisforus, and Victurinus. But Stialiterti is divided
by the Epternach into two names where is written Istalus,
Tertus. In the Corbie is Istialus, Tertus, which we more approve.
Then in place of Cicilia, Lautica, Victoria and Fortunatus,
is also Cilicia, Leutica or Lauda, Victuria
and Fortunata: thus for Paulica and Agapia, is read
also Paulicia and Appia. In the Epternach also is missing
the name of Amella and with one word is written Justidia,
to others Justus and Tecla, to which is added in the Corbie the name
of Firmus. Behold holy Martyrs nine above twenty, whom
we offer to Spain, would that we could often, since
we know, the people is most addicted to the sacred cult of Martyrs.
The mere name of Germanus among other Martyrs is reported
in MS. Parisiensis of Labbé, as the name of Justus in MSS.
of Arras of the Cathedral Church, and of Tournai of the monastery
of S. Martin. Of the city of Gerunda we treated XVIII March, at
the Life of SS. Narcissus Bishop of Gerunda and Felix his
Deacon, in the persecution of Diocletian crowned with martyrdom;
we shall treat again of the same on VIII June, on which day are venerated
SS. Germanus, Paulinus, Justus and Scicius, in the same
persecution of Diocletian at Gerunda having suffered martyrdom.
To which and other Martyrs Prudentius seems to have alluded in
the book περὶ
στεφανῶν, Hymn IV on the Martyrs of Caesaraugusta,
which we gave on XVI April: in which Gerunda,
he calls rich in sacred pledges, in this verse:
Gerunda rich in sacred limbs.
[3] Antonius Vincentius Domeneccus, in the general History
of the Saints of Catalonia, at the borders of May and June
places the Acts of four above-named Saints, Of these two perhaps are venerated on Tuesday after Trinity Sunday. whose
feast he says is held on Monday after Trinity Sunday.
I indeed vehemently suspect, that Germanus and Justus
are of those who are reported today: but because they have two other companions
joined to them, on account of these we defer to treat of them
until June, for which day we keep the original Acts themselves:
for what Tamayo de Salazar brings forth, even if he says
he took it from an old Gerundan MS., it is patent however to a reader
to be a recent and proper style of Tamayo himself, again
into Latin rendering, what Domeneccus from Latin into Spanish
had given. Otherwise I would not dissemble, that those Acts plainly
seem to be fictitious, nor worthy of faith, except as far as
they treat of the Translation made by a Gerundan Canon and afterwards
Bishop, Arnaldus de Monrodon, before the end of the century
XII; so that nothing prevents, that two having suffered on this day be joined to two others,
who suffered on another day. Perhaps also from Paulinus
and Scicius, in the one name of a woman wrongly conflated, was made
Paulicia.
