ON THE HOLY TIMIDENSES

IN THE PROCONSULAR PROVINCE OF AFRICA.

From the old Carthaginian Calendar.

Commentary

Timidenses, in the Proconsular Province of Africa (SS.)

D. P.

That Calendar, by us from its excavator

Joannes Mabillon much

praised, and described at XXV

of this month where of S. Flavian;

for this day II Kal. of June of the Holy

Timidenses' Birthday

suggests, by no other testimony to us indeed

confirmable, but neither

needing of other confirmation; Known from a single but indubitable testimony, when of the Birthdays of domestic

Saints most certainly above the rest can testify

the Carthaginian Church itself, whose this Calendar was,

by no means copious in names, nor more than eighty

days through the year, with the deposition of any of its Bishop, or of another

very memorable Saint, or wholly with the patrial name

inscribed having. There is indeed from S. Augustine bk. 7

against the Donatists ch. 22 the noted Faustus, Bishop from

Timida Regia; and from the Catalogue of those who in the year VI

of King Huneric, of Christ CCCCXC, at Carthage convened

in the Proconsular Province, in the Proconsular province, of which Carthage itself is the head,

Benenatus Tumidensis, in Corsica ordered to exile

for the faith. Regia seems to be surnamed that Timida, for distinction

from another Synonymous, whence perhaps in the same

Catalogue, among the Bishops of Mauretania Caesariensis, is held

Securus Timidanensis. Furthermore since the aforesaid Calendar

thus by groups of Saints makes mention, the memory

of Martyrs to celebrate is gathered from a similar following phrase, by which

are there indicated Birthday days, namely, XV Kal. August,

of the Holy Scillitani; XI Kal. Aug.

of the Holy Maxulitani, III Kal. Aug. of the Holy

Tuburbitan women; XVI Kal. Nov. of the Holy

Volitani, as others similarly indicated Martyrs, whose place of birth or contest

within the bounds of the Proconsular Province is known: and for

the Scillitani indeed of the title of Martyrdom is established from the Acts, on

the said their day to be brought forth. Nor with another phrase uses

the Calendar, when among few externals it mentions, Kal.

Aug. of the Holy Maccabees; and … Kal. Sept.

of the Holy White Mass. Would that with this indication had,

from somewhere a more distinct notice be drawn out, not only of those Timidenses

and other already named places; but also

of those whom the same Calendar has pertaining to Mauretania Caesariensis on the IIII Kal. Nov. Vagenses… in Mauretania,

Id. Nov. of the Holy Capitani (so, as I think, called

from their city called Caput-cillanum) and IIII

Non. Feb. of the Holy Carterienses, where I judge it should be read

Cartennenses. But if of these it is uncertain to inquire,

much more difficult it will be come into the notice of those, whose

Birthdays are called, III Id. Dec. of the holy Martyrs

Eronenses, XVI Kal. Feb. of the Holy Rubrenses,

XIIII Kal. Feb. of the Holy Tertullenses and Ficarienses, and elsewhere in Africa.

and finally on the XIII Kal. March of the Holy

Petrenses. For not even the places are known,

whence these receive the nomenclature: wherefore so all

together to propose here it pleased: whom indeed I think under Gentile

Emperors all suffered, none pertaining to the Vandalic

persecution, to which Galesinius would have removed them in his manner,

if a notice of them had been obtained.

ON S. DATIANUS OR DATIANA

MARTYR AT CARTHAGE IN AFRICA.

From the Martyrology of S. Hieronymus.

Commentary

Datiana or Datianus, Martyr at Carthage (S.)

D. P.

Datianus or Datiana at Carthage

celebrate the same ancient

apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology,

Lucca, Blume, and

Corbie printed at Paris. But

the old MS. of the Queen of Sweden, praised

by Holstenius in his Animadversions

to the Roman Martyrology,

has these things: At Carthage the birthday of S. Datianus. With palaestra however

omitted, the name of Datiana is read in MS. Parisiensis of Labbé;

and of Datianus, in MS. Augustanus of S. Udalric. Nor more than

six codices' testimonies do we find. We must however confess,

that not very celebrated was to the Carthaginian Church

this martyrdom, since in the aforesaid its Calendar of it

no mention is found: unless someone wished to suspect,

that the just-mentioned Holy Timidenses, brought to Carthage,

for the cause of the faith before the Proconsul to be pleaded,

and there having consummated their martyrdom; whose leader

was Datianus, alone in the Martyrology named.

ON SS. PAULINUS AND ISICHUS

MARTYRS AT ANTIOCH.

From the same Hieronymian Martyrology.

Commentary

Paulinus, Martyr at Antioch (S.)

Isicus, Martyr at Antioch (S.)

G. H.

The aforesaid apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology

conclude this

day and month with these words: At

Antioch of Paulinus and Isicus. For

this in the Epternach is engraved Isticus.

But with the prior reading agree the MS. Martyrologies, the Roman

of Cardinal Barberini, the Atrebatense

of the Cathedral Church, the Tornacense of the monastery of S. Martin;

and in these two is called their birthday, and is added

Justus. But this pertains to the Spanish Saints, having suffered at Gerunda.

But not having palaestra apposed both are mentioned in

MSS. Pragensis of the principal Church, and another submitted to us at Paris by

Philippus Labbé, but only Isicus in MS. Reichenau

in Suevia. More if anyone of these Martyrs shall come to know,

I will gladly learn: nor will I deny, that I would not have dared

to separate them from the Gerundan Martyrs,

and to defer them to June, except so concordantly in all

the exemplars of the Hieronymian Martyrology they are found

ascribed at Antioch, with also two interjected Martyrs,

one of Cirtha, the other of Carthage, a little above

named.

ON S. SIMPLICIANUS MARTYR

AT POITIERS IN GAUL.

A Sylloge on his sacred cult.

Simplicianus, Martyr at Poitiers in Gaul (S.)

G. H.

There exist Pictonic Litanies of the Saints,

who by birth or dwelling

ennobled the shore of the Pictones,

by Henricus Ludovicus Castanaeus

de la Rochepozay Bishop of the Pictavi

composed

and arranged, Cult, and illustrated with notes:

in which is invoked S.

Simplicianus the Martyr, and of him these things are noted: Simplicianus,

born of a man of consular rank and Rector of the Pictonic province,

because he scorned the cult of idols,

by his father's command near the city of the Pictavi was beheaded

with the sword, in the meadow next to the bridge of S. Cyprian,

where a Cross for memory's sake was anciently placed. To his

name a parochial church within the walls of the same

city is consecrated: The parochial church, and is added in the margin, that he is venerated on this

XXXI of May: on which day with this elogium he is celebrated by

Saussajus. At Poitiers of S. Simplicianus the Martyr, who as a young boy

by his Just father, unjust and impious, because he cultivated the faith of Christ,

was beheaded with the sword, the laurel of glorious martyrdom

he gloriously merited.

[2] In the Pictavian, as they call it, Pullarius, that is, Register of benefices

of the city among the parochial churches is numbered the above

cited, dedicated to S. Simplicianus: whose Parish-Priest to be constituted

the Abbot of S. Cyprian presents to the Dean of the Cathedral Church,

to whom it pertains, to confer that Benefice. In the proper

Offices of the Pictavian Church is prescribed the solemnity of S.

Simplicianus the Martyr, to be celebrated on this XXXI of May under

the rite of double, and this Prayer: Proper Prayers God who Blessed Simplicianus

the Martyr, in adolescence constituted,

in the contest of struggle strengthened; grant we beseech, that

by his merits and prayers eternal glory to attain

we may merit. Likewise this: God who your Church

by the merits and prayers of your most blessed Martyr Simplicianus

with marvelous splendor make bright; concede propitious,

that we who venerate his memory on earth,

intercessor him with you to have may merit in heaven.

For the second Nocturn this Lesson is set: and Lesson Simplicianus,

born of a man of consular rank and Rector of the Pictonic province,

as a youth by the admonitions of pious men in

Christ supported by religion was confirmed. Which

when his father had learned, and that the veneration of idols by

his son was held in contempt; against him by beheading

near the Pictavian city he ordered animadversion to be made,

and by this reason Simplicianus of the Christian faith illustrious

bore witness. Of the Saint's body's Relics,

which it is likely in his proper name's church at one time

were, it is wonderful that nothing is said by anyone.
