Twenty-Eight Martyrs Burned in the East

ON THE HOLY TWENTY-EIGHT MARTYRS BURNED IN THE EAST,

Commentary

The twenty-eight martyrs, burned by fire. (SS.)

This blessed fellowship of martyrs the menaia of the Greeks celebrate, with no names of persons or places added, and with no time of the passion marked. To throw out empty conjectures about them I judge superfluous. Here is the distich from the Menaia:

Φλέγουσιν ἄνδρας πέντε δὶς καὶ δὶς δύω· οἶς συμφλέγουσι πέντε δὶς καὶ δὶς δύω.

Five men twice over and twice two they burned:

And after these again five twice over and twice two.
