Commentary

Marcellinus, Martyr (St.)

Satulus, Martyr (St.)

Saturninus, Martyr (St.)

Quiriacus, Martyr (St.)

Regina, Martyr (St.)

Procula, Martyr (St.)

Four others, Martyrs (SS.)

G. H.

The same four copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology,

after the African Martyrs related, of whom

we have already treated, propose in the second place

these athletes of Christ: & the Blumian copy indeed

with these words: And elsewhere of Marcellinus,

Satullus, Saturninus, Quiriacus, Regina, Procula,

& four others. The same things are read in the Lucca codex,

but only three companions are indicated. In the Epternach copy

a lacuna seems to have crept in, when only these things are indicated: And

elsewhere of Marcellinus, Satulus & four others. From the MS.

of Corbie printed at Paris these things are reported: And elsewhere of Marcellus,

Satullus, Marcellinus, Saturninus, Quiriacus, Reginae,

Proculi & XIV others. Where it is to be noted, that in

this copy only IV companions are added to SS. Amphianus & Victor,

who for others were XIV; & vice versa, here XIV companions are added

who by others are counted only as IV. Then the names

of Marcellus & Marcellinus are set down, whereas by others Marcellinus alone

is indicated. If anyone besides wishes to add Marcellinus,

as far as we are concerned it is allowed. Rabanus Maurus, Satullus being omitted, the rest

so commemorates: And elsewhere of Marcellinus, Saturninus, Quiriacus,

Reginae, Proculae & four others. The author

of the Martyrology published under the name of Bede reports these things: And elsewhere

of Marcellus, Saturninus, Satullus, Quiriacus, Reginae, Proculae.

In the Richeberg MS. in place of Marcellus is written Marcellinus.

But Galesinius, citing Bede, so has it: In another place

of Marcellus, Saturninus, Satulus, Proculae, Reginae. MSS.

of Monte Cassino & Altempsian, Augsburg & Labbe:

And elsewhere of Marcellinus: the Barberini & Prague add,

of Quiriacus with six others. The Vatican MS. mentions Marcellus;

but that of Trier St. Maximinus, of Marcellinus & others.

The name of Proculus alone is held in the MSS. Richenau &

Rheinau; for which elsewhere the name of Procula is almost always written:

unless the name of Proculus has been transposed, to be referred to the class

of Martyrs of Thessalonica, of which we shall presently treat. In

the parchment fragment of the Canons of Lucca, with Florentinius,

on this day is commemorated the memory of Quiriaca,

above Quiriacus, & of Procula. Thus far the Martyrologies:

more if any be suggested from elsewhere, we shall give thanks.
