G. H.
This third class of Martyrs, and as it were
distinguished into two bands, is proposed in four copies of the Hieronymian
Martyrology, in nearly this manner: In
Thessalonica of Macedonia of Theodulus, Agathopus,
Mastesus, Publius, Valerius & three others. Urbanus,
Julianus, Proculus, Gagus, Agapitus, Dionysius, Cyriacus,
Zonisus. There is some variety in the writing. For in place
of Theodulus in the MS. Lucca is Theudulus, as for Agatophus,
is read Agathopus, Agatopus and Agathopidia. So
in place of Mastesus, is Mastisus and Martis: & for Publius also
Puplius: for Valerius, Valerius: then with three others ends
the first band. In the second band, in place of Urbanus, the Epternach
has Orbanus; then the names of Julianus, Proculus and Gagus
are constantly the same; but in place of Agapitus, is read Agapitius and
Agapetius; afterwards Dionysius, Cyriacus and Zonisus, but the two
last names are lacking in the Corbie MS. printed at Paris.
Thus far the Martyrology of St. Jerome. In the Rheinau MS.
it is thus held: At Thessalonica of Theodulus, Agatopus: to whom
in the Richenau is added, Publius, Orbanus. The Augsburg MS.
of St. Udalric mentions Theodulus, Orbanus: but the
Paris of Labbe, Theodulus, Urbanus: the Aachen MS.
of Urbanus alone: Greven in the Supplement of Usuard, of Urbanus &
Niertus the Martyrs: where perhaps for Niertus should be read Nicetus,
who was also joined in the Aachen, although before there had been given
his eulogy from Usuard; & he is Bishop of Lyons,
of whom we shall treat below on this day. In the ancient MS. of Trier
of St. Maximinus mention is made of Valerius & Regus; for which
perhaps Gagus is read above.
On the Holy Martyrs
GORDONIANUS, MAGNUS, JULIUS, AND DONATUS.
CommentaryGordonianus, Martyr (St.)
Magnus, Martyr (St.)
Julius, Martyr (St.)
Donatus, Martyr (St.)
G. H.
This is the last class of Martyrs, in the MS. Corbie
copy of the Hieronymian Martyrology
printed at Paris thus indicated: Of Gordonianus,
Magnus, Julius, Donatus. It is distinguished from the preceding class in
the Epternach copy of St. Willibrord, when it is thus read:
Elsewhere of Gortonianus: & in the codices Lucca & Blumian with these
words: And elsewhere of Gordianus. In the MS. of Trier of St. Maximinus
the name of Gurgoniana is held. Nor thus far more about
these have we read: and therefore we rest in the bare notice of the names,
as they are suggested by the Martyrologies.
