ON SAINT EUTYCHIUS

MARTYR, AT FERENTINO AMONG THE HERNICI.

Commentary

Eutychius, Martyr at Ferentino among the Hernici (St.)

G. H.

Concerning Ferentino, an ancient city of Latium among the Hernici, we have treated on April 8, in the Acts of St. Redemptus, Bishop of the same city; and whatever can be known of this holy Martyr Eutychius, we have set forth there from book 3 of the Dialogues of St. Gregory, chapter 28, namely that on a certain day, while Redemptus was visiting his parishes, he had come to the church of Blessed His apparition made to St. Redemptus the Bishop. Eutychius the Martyr, and wished a bed to be made for himself near the tomb, and there rested after his labor: when at midnight, as he related, he could neither perfectly wake nor sleep, but oppressed as is usual with sleep, his waking mind was burdened as by a certain weight: and before him stood the blessed Martyr Eutychius, saying: "Redemptus, are you awake?" To whom he answered, "I am awake." Who said: "The end of all flesh is come, the end of all flesh is come, the end of all flesh is come." After which threefold voice the vision of the Martyr, with the grace of Almighty God, which appeared to the eyes of his mind, vanished. This Saint is inscribed in the Roman Martyrology on this day with these words: Sacred cult. At Ferentino among the Hernici, of St. Eutychius the Martyr. Ferrari also makes mention of the same St. Eutychius in his Catalogue of the Saints of Italy, adding from the aforementioned words of St. Gregory some notice. Nicolas Braut, Bishop of Sarsina, in his Poetic Martyrology composed these verses concerning him:

The people of Ferentino year by year with piety Celebrate the feast day of the Martyr Eutychius.
