ON STS. THE MARTYRS OF NICOMEDIA
SERGIUS AND BARTHOLOMEW.
From the Hieronymian Martyrologies.
CommentarySergius, Martyr, at Nicomedia (St.)
Bartholomew, Martyr, at Nicomedia (St.)

What the most ancient Epternach codex means on this day, no one would easily divine: At Nicomedia, of Isalus; which name must have been corrupted by the scribe's drowsiness, since in no others is anything akin read, except in the Rheinau and Reichenau codices, where "Isai" is expressed. Moreover the remaining codices expressly announce two Saints, as in the text of Florentinius: At Nicomedia, the birthday of the holy Sergius and Bartholomew. The Corbie codex has thus: At Nicomedia, the birthdays of Sts. Sega and Bartholomew, martyr; which announcement is the same in the codex of the Queen of Sweden published by us, and also in Florentinius. In the other abridged codices there is greater confusion, since there they are generally assigned to Rome, and one reads "of Sega and Bartholomea." Better, I think, are the names formed by us from the Fontenelle codex, so that for "Sega" we judge that "Sergius" must altogether be written, as we expressed above.
