ON STS. THE ANONYMOUS MARTYRS
AT NICOPOLIS.

CommentaryThe anonymous Martyrs at Nicopolis (SS.)
J. B. S.
Among the other announcements in those codices that are suspect, of which we treated in the Passed-Over, this one seems sufficiently safe, although it names no Martyr. The words are: At Nicopolis, the passion of many Martyrs, whose names God knows — just as elsewhere this Martyrology strings together classes of anonymous Martyrs whose names God alone knows. Concerning the position itself, or the place of the martyrdom, Florentinius rightly doubts, observing thus: But which Nicopolis it is among the several cities of this name is difficult to affirm. I should incline toward the Nicopolis of Thrace or Bithynia, because there, especially in the times of Diocletian, was the greater butchery of Martyrs. Let the conjecture stand for what it is worth; we have nothing to add to it.
