ON SS. LEO AND JULIANA, MARTYRS,

AT MYRA IN LYCIA.

Commentary

Leo, M., at Myra in Lycia (St.)

Juliana, M., at Myra in Lycia (St.)

Of the public cult of these Saints we are indeed made more certain from the Greek and Latin calendars; They are found in the Greek calendars and in the Roman Martyrology. but they are not announced in them everywhere in the same manner. For the Menology of Sirletus reports them in these words: On the same day (the XVIII of August), the contest of the holy martyrs Juliana and Leo: who suffered

by the sea near Myra, a city of Lycia. In our transcript from Chifflet's Menaeon I read this: Ἰουλιανῆς μ. καὶ Λέοντος ἀσκητοῦ. Of Juliana the martyr, and of Leo the ascetic. The great Menaea record this: The memory of the holy martyr Juliana, at Strobylus (πλησίον τοῦ Στροβύλου), and of the holy martyr Leo, who suffered by the sea (the Mediterranean) near Myra of Lycia. To which add the Roman Martyrology: At Myra in Lycia, of the holy martyrs Leo and Juliana. Whether these belong to this day or to another, on which martyrs of the same name are found in the sacred calendars, this is the proper place for marking them, on which they are noted in the Roman Martyrology. Du Cange in book 4 of the Constantinopolis Christiana, page 149, mentions the Juliana of this day from the Menaea at this XVIII day of August.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
