BY J. P.

The first four Saints are announced by the Martyrology published by Florentinius, Various observations on the announcements there assigned to Antioch, but without the title of martyrs; which nevertheless I think may be attributed to them, following Florentinius, who writes this in his notes: The four Antiochene Martyrs, passed over in the printed Martyrologies, we owe to the more ancient Martyrology, confirmed without any discrepancy in the Antwerp and Corbie copies: in the latter, however, there are added Juvianus and Julius, equally unknown to the others. In the Reichenau Martyrology, printed by us, the two first named above are marked also on this day: At Antioch, Zenobius and Capitolinus. But on the morrow: In Syria, Julian; whether he is the same as the one who a little before was called Juvianus, I have nothing from which to affirm. The Rheinau copy marks today one of the aforesaid: At Antioch, Zenobius. The Augsburg copy does not determine the place: for after announcing St. Bartholomew the Apostle in India, it presently subjoins: Elsewhere, Genobius and Genesius, martyrs. At Nevers, Capitulinus, Patricius the confessor, Gelderus the confessor. Where Capitulinus ought to be placed before "At Nevers": for SS. Patricius and Gildardus (who is here incorrectly written Gilderus) belong to Nevers; of whom this day we treat separately; as also of St. Genesius, the Roman martyr, among the Passed Over of today: concerning whom we said in the same place that he would be treated by us tomorrow together with the Roman Martyrology; besides whom, another martyr of Arles is also then inscribed in various sacred Calendars. In our transcript of the Brussels manuscript additions to the Usuard of Greven is set: At Antioch, Genesius and Capitulinus.

[2] The Labbean Martyrology writes corruptly thus: Elsewhere, of these Saints. Zonabus, Genesius the martyr. At Nevers, Capitulinus, Patricius the confessor. Geldarus the confessor. Which faulty transposition is to be corrected, as I said above in the case of the Augsburg copy. Observe in passing that the name Emereta, which is written in the very text of the Martyrology published by Florentinius, has been changed by me in the title above into Emerita, which pleases me more, and which is twice found so formed from other copies in the notes of the same Florentinius. But as for Antioch, where we have announced the sacred Champions, we desire it especially to be extended to the first four set down in the same title; to which perhaps the other two also belong, not sufficiently known to us from elsewhere, but nevertheless added in the second copy which Florentinius cited. When therefore we announce all our six Martyrs at Antioch in the catalogue of Saints which is given above before this XXIV day of August, we understand the situation of that city according to the explanation just given. Nor does anything else occur with which we think the reader need be longer detained.

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
