ON ST. ALBERICUS, HERMIT,

NEAR BAGNO IN ETRURIA.

Commentary

Albericus, hermit, near Bagno in Etruria (St.)

J. P.

Ferrari in the Catalogue of the Saints of Italy on this day reports these few things to our purpose: Albericus the hermit, of Etruria, led a harsh life within the Apennine mountains in the territory of Sarsina near the town of Bagno; where the place is still called the Cell of St. Albericus, and is inhabited by hermits to this present day: whose body, preserved in the church of St. Anastasius near the valley of the diocese of Montefeltro, is religiously honored on this day, the neighboring peoples flocking thither for the feast day, and especially the bath-keepers, because it is reported that St. Albericus called forth those baths. Thus far Ferrari, indicating that these came forth from the monuments of the abbey of St. Anastasius. He adds that he has not yet seen Acts, nor has he learned whether any exist. Both I too say, yet not thereby deterred from weaving this Saint into our work on the faith of Ferrari, who affirms that he is publicly honored. Add, if you will, Castellanus, who in his Universal Martyrology reports this: At Bagno near Camaldoli in the diocese of Sarsina, St. Albericus, solitary. Of Sassina or Sarsina I have treated in this volume, page 189. The time in which this Saint lived is unknown.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
