Basilius in Armenia

11 February · commentary

ON ST. BASILIUS IN ARMENIA.

Commentary

Basilius, in Armenia (St.)

G. H.

Two more ancient manuscript Martyrologies establish his place and birthday with remarkable agreement, one of which is the Roman one under the name of St. Jerome, St. Basilius in Armenia the other that of Reichenau; in which is read: In Armenia, of Basilius. His Acts, like those of many others, lie hidden. To Armenia Minor is attributed by most Sebaste or Sebastia, a city ennobled by the contests of very many Martyrs especially under Diocletian and Licinius, which Ptolemy and Pliny assign to Cappadocia, as we noted on the third of February in the Life of St. Blaise, Bishop of Sebaste and Martyr, section 1. Hermannus Greven in his Additions to Usuard,

besides the Basilianus who suffered in Campania, records another Basilianus, and incorrectly joins him to the Martyr St. Poenes of Apamea: whether different from the St. Basilius to be discussed on 12 February? we believe this to be the same Basilius who suffered in Armenia. We shall treat of St. Basilius the monk on the twelfth of February; where we shall also raise the further question whether that one should truly be considered different from this.

Commentary

Basilianus, Martyr in Campania (St.) Amantius, Martyr in Campania (St.) Tulicus, Martyr in Campania (St.)

G. H.

The ancient manuscript Martyrologies, those of Liessies in Hainaut and of the monastery of St. Martin at Tournai, as well as Hermannus Greven in his Additions to Usuard, have the following for the eleventh of February: In Campania, of Basilianus and Amantius. The Roman manuscript Martyrology under the name of St. Jerome: In Campania, of Basilianus, and elsewhere, of Amantius, Tulicus. The Reichenau manuscript, omitting Basilianus, has: And elsewhere, of Amantius, Tulicus, Zoticus, Cyriacus. We have already treated above of the last two. Moreover, Campania is the well-known region of Italy adjacent to Latium, of which very many Saints are recorded in this work, among whom on this day St. Castrensis the Bishop is venerated. We have treated of another Amantius, but a Roman Martyr, on the tenth of February.
