Martyrs of Smyrna: Servilianus

27 February · commentary

ON THE HOLY MARTYRS OF SMYRNA: SERVILIANUS, DATIANUS, AND LEANDER.

Commentary.

Servilianus, Martyr at Smyrna in Asia (St.) Dacianus, Martyr at Smyrna in Asia (St.) Leander, Martyr at Smyrna in Asia (St.)

Author G. H.

We have thus far given various Martyrs of Smyrna in January and February, to whom on this day these three are added, recorded in the ancient manuscript Roman Martyrology, or that of St. Jerome, in the manuscripts of Reichenau, Laetia, and Tournai of St. Martin, in these words: In the city of Smyrna in Asia, the birthday of Saints Servilianus, Datianus, and Leander. The same are commemorated without an assigned place in the manuscript of Paris belonging to our Philippe Labbe; but in the manuscript of Aachen, Leander alone appears, the others being absent due to the mutilated codex. In the small manuscript of St. Maximin, on the 28th of February, Servilianus is recorded. Concerning Tacianus indicated by Hermann Greven, we have treated among the African Martyrs. The time and manner of contest of these and the preceding Saints are uncertain.
