G. H.

This is the third day on which we report many Martyrs killed at Rome for the faith of Christ, during the slaughter of the impious, and the army of the heavenly militia triumphing in the blood poured out: concerning whom Notker in the first place has these things, At Rome the birth of the holy Martyrs, Marcellus, Avidus, Gaius, Various Roman Martyrs. Donatus, with more than one hundred fifty others. In the ancient Ms. of Utrecht of the Collegiate Church of S. Mary, written six hundred years ago, these things are read, At Rome of Marcellus the Martyr, with four hundred others. In Rabanus, and in the Ms. Martyrology of Aachen, and the Ms. Kalendar of S. Maximinus, after Laurentinus has been reported in Tuscany, is added, And four hundred others. Which seem better with the distinction added in the Ms. of Ado of the Queen of Sweden in these words: Likewise in Tuscany at Arezzo of S. Laurentius, and elsewhere of four hundred. So with several things interposed Grevenus says: Likewise of four hundred Martyrs. In another Ms. of the Queen of Sweden which Holstenius esteemed, it is read thus: At Rome the birth of S. Marcellus and many others.

[2] We have here proposed ninety expressed by their proper names, Of these the First Decade, which we have again distributed into decades: of which the first is SS. Marcellus, Avidus, Gagus, Donatus, Nefomus, Possemus, Saturninus, Januarius, Victor, Virianus. Some of these we have noted in other Fasti. Besides this, there is memory of SS. Marcella, Avitus, Gagus Methonus, Possemus, Virianus. In the Ms. of Rhinau: SS. Marcellus, Donatus, Gagus, Januarius. But Marcellus, Saturninus, in the Roman Ms. of Cardinal Barberini, of Trier of S. Maximinus, of Liège of S. Lambert and S. Laurentius, and the Florarium. The second Decade is of SS. Urban, Felix, Veneria, Rogatianus, [II,] Fortunatus, Extricatus, Victurina, Gorgonia, Toga, Felicitas. Of these the names of Urban, Felix, Veneria are in the Mss. of Barberini, of Trier of S. Maximinus, of Liège of S. Lambert and S. Laurentius, and the Florarium. But the names of Urban and Felix are doubled in the Ms. of Lucca, which it has been sufficient to indicate. In place of Toga is also read Doga and Tosa. III, The Third Decade is of SS. Valeria, Prisca, Paula, Fortunata, Donata, Victuria, Sinereus, Cassianus, Quintus, Zetula. But by varying reading the names are made into Paulia, Fortunatus, Donatus, Victoria, Sinerei or Sinerci. There is also the name of Victoria among others in the Vatican Ms. of S. Peter. The fourth decade is of SS. Victorinus, [IV,] Silvanus, Gagia, Rogatianus, Aurelius, Apronus, Nabor, Quintus, Metuana, Libosus. But the readings vary in the names, Victorina, Aurilius, Paporus, Mettevanus. The fifth decade is of SS. Emeritus, Sextus, Fructus, Severus, [V,] Secundus, likewise Januarius, Florus, Titona, Donata, Januaria. But it is also written, Emerita, Tyturius or Titorius, Januarius. The sixth decade is of SS. Severa, Januarissa, [VI,] Honorata, Saturninus, Victoria, Matura, Lucia, Neptunalis, Crescens, Pompanus. Of these Januarissa is lacking in others, and in one is put Januarius: we hold the former here. In the Epternach transcription the spelling is different: Severus, Honoratus, Matunus, Pomponus. VII, The seventh decade is of SS. Cyprus, Tertula, Lucas, Silvana, Publius, Obercus, Justa, Domitius, Procula, Rufina: but elsewhere are read the names, Lucius, Oberca or Obracus, Justus. The eighth decade is of SS. Valeria, Januaria, Silvanus, VIII, Felix, Veneria, Victor, Fortunata, Exuperia, Flavia, Justus: who all and many others are lacking in the Corbie apograph: but Rufina in the supposititious Bede is joined to the IV day of this month with three others, taken from the number of the Lyonese Martyrs. [IX,] The ninth decade is of SS. Matrona, Faustina, Gallicia, Januaria, Fortunatus, Publius, Romanus, Petrus, Veranus, Apunus: from which there is a varying spelling, reading Fortunata, Verianus or Verantus. Finally the number of the remaining Anonymous ones joined to these is also different in different sources. For in the Epternach apograph 102 are read, in the Corbie 84, in the Lucan only 7, perhaps a larger number having dropped out.

[3] On the tenth day of June are indicated in certain additions written by the Brussels Carthusians to Grevenus, some June 10. SS. Saturninus the Bishop, Cassianus and Felix, who are all found among the said Martyrs, but whether they can be referred here, or ought to be elsewhere, is not clear to us.
