Commentary

Silvanus, Martyr (S.)

LXXXIII or LXXXXIIII Martyrs (SS.)

G. H.

We would judge these also to have suffered at Rome, were it not that in the Mss. of Barberini, of Trier of S. Maximinus, of Liège of S. Lambert and S. Laurentius, after the Martyrs reported as having suffered at Rome, would be added, And elsewhere of Silvanus, with eighty-two others. In the Epternach and Blumian, the particle and elsewhere omitted, after the Roman Martyrs is subjoined the notice of Silvanus and eighty-three others; In the Lucan, Silvanus with ninety-three others. In Grevenus's Auctarium of Usuard, On the same day of S. Silvanus with eighty-two others: In the Ms. of Cologne of S. Mary ad Gradus, of Salvanus with eighty-two. The Ms. Florarium: Likewise of S. Silvanus, Peter, and Lucianus of Antioch, with LXXXII others. There is a Peter above among the Roman Martyrs; Lucianus of Antioch the Presbyter is venerated on January 7, on which day we gave his Acts: but Lucianus is also numbered among the following Martyrs. The name of Silvanus alone, his companions omitted, is in the Mss. of Augsburg of S. Ulrich, and of Paris of Labbé, and is joined to S. Marcellus, the leader of the Roman Martyrs just praised here.
