Commentary

Cristus or Euristes, Martyr at Caesarea in Palestine (S.)

G. H.

Caesarea, among the cities of Palestine most celebrated, supplied many Martyrs to our work, among whom on this day in an ancient MS. of the Queen of Sweden, published by Luc Holstein, in the first place someone there having suffered is referred to, in this manner: VI Ides of June, at Caesarea of Palestine the birth of S. Chrestus; thus also it is written in the MSS. Augustan, Gellonensian, of St. Gall, and Parisian of Labbé, as also in the Reichenau in Swabia, Orestes in the Aachen, Cestus in the Reichenau. But in the copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology of Lucca and Blume, and likewise in Notker, it is so read: At Caesarea of Palestine the birth of Cristus: and with the first letter changed, it is written in the Corbie copy, Eristus; and with even greater diversity in the MS. Epternacensian copy, Euristes. In the title we have proposed the name of Cristus, and added or Euristis, on account of the antiquity of the Epternacensian MS. If anyone shall shed greater light, or have thought otherwise, we shall gladly acquiesce.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through July are done, August is underway, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
