ON SAINTS MARCUS AND JULIUS,
MARTYRS AT DUROSTORUM IN MOESIA.
From the Hieronymian Martyrology.
CommentaryMarcus, Martyr at Durostorum in Moesia (S.)
Julius, Martyr at Durostorum in Moesia (S.)
G. H.
We proceed with the four copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology, in three of which, the Epternacensian, the Lucensian, and the Blumian, in the third place it is so read: In the city of Durostorum, the birth of S. Marcus. The same is had in the Martyrology of Notker, and the other of the Queen of Sweden cited above. In the Corbie copy a companion is added to him in these words. In the city of Durostorum, the birth of S. Marcus, Lucius. Durostorum was a city in Lower Moesia and modern Bulgaria, where many Martyrs died for the faith of Christ; namely, on May 25, Passicrates, Valentio, and others: whom on May 27 S. Julius followed, whose Acts and various eulogies we published on the said day: nor do we have wherefore we may judge him to be the same, or even determine him to be different. Let judgment rest with the reader; who if he can bring anything more certain, will render a service to us and to the Saint. The birth of S. Marcus, no contest added, or any Companion, is had in the ancient Calendar before the Psalter which pertains to the Trier monastery of S. Maximinus. But for Martis, instead of
Marci, it is read in the MSS. Gellonensian, one of St. Gall, and the Parisian of Labbé.
ON THE SAINTS MARTYRS OF NICOMEDIA, VITICUS, NESTOR, CARUS, LAMPITES, MARCINA, ACACIUS.
From the same Martyrology.
CommentaryViticus, Martyr at Nicomedia (S.)
Nestor, Martyr at Nicomedia (S.)
Carus, Martyr at Nicomedia (S.)
Lampites, Martyr at Nicomedia (S.)
Marcina, Martyr at Nicomedia (S.)
Acacius, Martyr at Nicomedia (S.)
G. H.
In the fourth place are referred in the aforementioned copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology these six Martyrs: and indeed in the very ancient Epternacensian thus; Nicomedia, of Viticus, Nestor, Carus, Lampites, and Marcina, Acacius. The other copies agree in naming the contest-place as Nicomedia, and in the names of Viticus and Nestor; they differ in the rest. For in place of Cari, Lampitis, they have in a single word Carolapidis and Carolapis: for Marcina indeed Marina: the name however of Acacius is wanting in the Lucensian and Blumian, but in the Corbeian Foci is read; so that perhaps another Martyr seems to appear, and both he and Acacius to be separated from the rest. In Notker it is so had. At Nicomedia of Eutychius, Nestorius and Marina: where Eutychius is placed in the place of Viticus. The MSS. Reichenovian and Aachen with Greven; At Nicomedia of S. Nestor. Viticus, without contest-place, is referred to in the MS. Gellonensian, Augustan, some of St. Gall, and Labbé. Nor have we obtained more concerning them.
