ON SAINTS FESTUS AND LUCIA AND OTHER TWENTY-TWO
MARTYRS AT ROME.
Notice from older Ms. Martyrologies.
Festus, Martyr at Rome (S.)
Lucia, Martyr at Rome (S.)
XXII, Martyrs at Rome (SS.)
G. H.
The Hieronymian Martyrology's apograph
Epternacensian its Martyrs thus consigns: Of Rome of Festus,
of Lucia, with others Twenty
two. In the Corbie apograph
a single letter is added, this
manner: Of Rome of Festus, of Luceia, with others Twenty
two. And similar are read in Mss. Trier
of S. Martin, Cologne of S. Mary ad
Gradus, Utrecht of S. Mary, Florary Ms.
& others. But Rabanus both names changes,
Of Rome of Fuscus, of Lucea, with others Twenty
two. The Hieronymian apograph of Lucca
& Labbé's Martyrology in year 1475 printed
these have, Of Rome of Festus, of Luceia with
others Twenty two. Hence Mss. Barberini,
Bigot, Trier of S. Maximinus, &
other six, which we have thus read: Of Rome of Sistus,
of Luceia with others Twenty two. But Mss.
Cassinese & Altempsian of Lucela in place of Luceia,
with Sistus & others anonymous. But
these omitted, in Ms. Parisian of Labbé is read of Festus,
of Luccia; in Augsburg, of Fistula, of Luceia;
in Vatican, of Fistus, of Luceia; in Reichenau
of Lucia: & in all the field Rome is prefixed.
But the number is augmented in Ms. Ado of S.
Lawrence at Liège in these words: Of Rome
of Sixtus, of Luceia with others Twenty three. But Greven
in Auctary of Usuard: At Rome of holy
Sixtus, & Luceia with others many.
The Martyrology at Cologne & Lübeck in year 1490
printed Of Rome of holy Martyrs Sixtus
& Luceia Virgin with others Twenty two.
From all these disagree what to the Appendix
of Ado in Mosander & Rosweyde rejected
were with these words: Of Rome of S. Faustus, with others
Twenty three: which thence translated were to today's
Roman Martyrology: & is cited
Bede, although in a faulty codex Fiscus for
Faustus is read, says Baronius; but nothing
such has the genuine of Bede Martyrology, in which
only is made mention of the Forerunner of the Lord: but what
under Bede's name had Baronius, supposititious
to the same is & nearly from Ado taken.
We with the most ancient S. Jerome's Martyrology
have proposed SS. Festus, Lucia & Twenty
two Companions. In Notker, with the field omitted
Rome, after Simplicius Bishop of Autun,
are indicated names of Festus & Luterius, for Lucia.
