Martyrs Marcellus and Antonius

1 March · commentary

ON THE HOLY MARTYRS MARCELLUS AND ANTONIUS.

Commentary

Marcellus, Martyr (Saint)

Antonius, or Antoninus, Martyr (Saint)

Many Marcelluses and Antoniuses are found, Martyrs among them as well: but nowhere together, except in the printed Menaea and the Chifflet manuscripts, and in the Lives of Maximus of Cythera, in which these words are read: "The Holy Martyrs Marcellus and Antonius are destroyed by fire." The Menaea add:

A kind of smelting-furnace there was for the two athletes; In it they shine more than gold.

All else lies hidden. They are recorded also in the manuscript Synaxarion of the Collège de Clermont at Paris, but, as we said before, in place of Antonius there is Antoninus.
