ON ST. NESTORIUS, MARTYR

Commentary

Nestorius, or Nestor, Martyr (Saint)

There are many Nestors in the Martyrologies; besides this one there is no Nestorius. I believe that after the heresiarch Nestorius the orthodox abominated that name and thereafter did not give it to their children; or at least that, of those on whom it had fallen, none came to be enrolled among the Saints. This one seems to be older; but in what age he lived, or in what part of the world, we have not ascertained. Maximus of Cythera and the printed Menaea say that he was slain by the sword, and the Menaea sing this, seasoned with very little grace indeed:

His neck drawn backward, Nestorius has his throat cut forward.

In the manuscript Menologion of our Pierre-François Chifflet he is here called Nestor. That he is, however, different from the Nestor who suffered martyrdom with Tribimaeus in the city of Perge on the second day of March, we conjecture from the fact that the Menaea commemorate both. Although the Synaxarion records Nestor with Tribimius on the first day of March, not the second.
