ON ST. PION, MARTYR, AT ANTIOCH.
CommentaryPion, Martyr at Antioch (S.)
He is related in last place in the frequently cited Martyrology of St. Jerome: and indeed in the codex printed at Paris and the Blumian manuscript in these words: At Antioch of Nicomedia, of Pion. In our copies and the Lucensian, Nicom. and Nicomed. also appear. In the Barberini manuscript, Nicomedia is inserted. The commemoration of St. Pion: But the manuscript of the Queen of Sweden lauded above has only this: Antioch, of Pion. And with no added place, the name of Pion or Pioni is found in the ancient manuscripts of Augsburg, Labbé, the Vatican of St. Peter, Tamlactensian, of St. Mary ad Gradus at Cologne, and others. On the day before, that is, March 13, is the memorial of St. Prion in the Martyrology of St. Cyriacus, whom we judge to be this Pion. In the appended word Nicom, Nicomed and Nicomedia, we are doubtful whether a name, whether of a man or a woman, should be taken as a Martyr of Antioch, which seems sufficiently probable: or whether it should be rejected as inserted elsewhere through error, which has repeatedly happened, we leave the resolution to the reader, until from more manuscripts something more certain may be established.
