ON ST. CRESCENTIANA
MARTYR AT ROME.
CommentaryCrescentiana, Martyr at Rome (S.)
G. H.
The present-day tables of the Roman Martyrology in the first place report S. Crescentiana the Martyr at Rome. Baronius in the Notes alleges concerning her ancient manuscripts: which hitherto we have not seen: then he adds that there was once a titulus at Rome of S. Crescentiana, of which mention is had in the first Roman Council under Pope Symmachus. It was held in the year CCCCXCIX, Titulus of S. Crescentiana. after the Consulate of Paulinus, in which among the Presbyters subscribed Bonus Presbyter of the titulus of S. Crescentiana. Ferrarius adds in the Catalog of Saints of Italy that the rest is wholly unknown. Nicolaus Brautius Bishop of Sarsina in the Poetic Martyrology with this distich, as if said of all, attempts to honor her.
The woman beheld the torturer with cheerful gaze,
Constant prepared to suffer every torment.
Octavius Pancirolius in the Treasure of the city of Rome, region 2 church 19, asserts that some hold that the church at the foot of the Caelian mount near the Lateran, which is now dedicated to SS. Peter and Marcellinus the Martyrs, whether it is now in the church of SS. Peter and Marcellinus. was once sacred to S. Crescentiana: and Pompeius Ugonius confesses in the History of the Roman Stations, Station 18, that no Presbyter under the title of SS. Peter and Marcellinus was present at the said Roman Council, which we leave to others further to discuss.
