ACHILLES, SIPPONIUS, EPIMENUS, AND NEREUS.

Commentary

Achilles, Martyr at Rome (S.)

Sipponius, Martyr at Rome (S.)

Epimenus, Martyr at Rome (S.)

Nereus, Martyr at Rome (S.)

G. H.

We proceed with the ancient apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology. Of these the Codex Lucensis proposes these four thus: At Rome Achellus, Sipponus, Epiminus, Nereus. The same four reports MS. Blumian in this manner: At Rome Achillus, Sipponia, Piminus, Nereus. Of them three in MS. Epternach are thus indicated: At Rome Achilis, Epimenus, Nereus. In MS. Corbeian printed at Paris, with the arena Rome of martyrdom not indicated, mention is made of Syppianus, Apiminus. In MS. Tornacens of S. Martin these things are had: At Rome on the Salarian Way the passion of SS. Achilles, Sepio, Januarius. The same things are had in MS. of the Lætian monastery: but in place of Sepio, is read Serapion, who above is said Sipponus, and Sipponia. But Januarius seems to be referred to the preceding class of African Martyrs. S. Epimenus is inscribed in MSS. Augustan of S. Udalric, and Parisian of Labbé. Perhaps the Romans will sometime suggest further notice of these Martyrs.
