[1] The ancient Ms. of the Queen of Sweden, set forth by Holstenius in the Animadversions to the Roman Martyrology, has thus of these Saints: In Africa of Paul, Quadratus, with three others. The names of all are expressed in the ancient apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology, & in the Lucca one in these words: In Africa likewise of Paul, Anteon, Quadratus, Rufinus, Valeria. The particle likewise is in respect of Paul, related in the preceding troop, & is wanting in the Mss. of Echternach & Blume; in which in place of Anteon is written Ateonis & Ansimi. In the Corbie codex struck at Paris is added Magnus, who is wanting in others. The Mss. of Monte Cassino & Altemps order it to be read thus: In Africa of Paul, Rufina, & Valeria. But better the Trier Ms. of S. Maximinus: In Africa of Rufinus & Valeria. And, the arena omitted, the name of Ruffinus is in the Paris Ms. of Labbe, & the Appendix of Grevenus to Usuard: to which is added Valerius in place of Valeria in the Aachen Ms. In the Lucca apograph at XXI May the same Paul, Anteon, Quadratus are referred, & wrongly ascribed to Auxerre.

[2] The memory of S. Quadratus after Usuard, Ado, Notker, & other later writers, is thus inserted in the Roman Martyrology: In Africa of S. Quadratus the Martyr, in whose solemnity S. Augustine had a sermon. Baronius hears that mention of his Sermon is made in the Index of Possidius. Would that this might sometime come forth as came forth the sermon on SS. Perpetua & Felicitas, given at VII March.
