All the ancient apographs of the Hieronymian Martyrology begin the fourth day of May with these holy Martyrs: & the Corbie one struck at Paris with these words: VII Kalends of June the Birthday of SS. Eraclius, Paul, Mindina, Jocundus. The same are read in another Corbie Ms. not yet struck: Did they suffer in Africa? But Jocundus being omitted, the rest are had in the Lucca & Blume apographs. No arena of Martyrdom is there indicated: but the Echternach Ms. seems to supply the defect with this variety of names. In Africa, of Eraclius, Paulinus, Mundinus. The Mss. of Reichenau & Rheinau follow in this manner: In Africa of Eraclius, Paul, for which in the Aachen one the name Paulinus is had: Heraclius is in the Labbe Ms., also with the arena Africa. Meanwhile concerning it there can be controversy, since in three other apographs it is not had, & soon other Martyrs are indicated as having suffered in Africa, with whom they could have been joined. This therefore to the reader we wished thus nakedly to propose, if perhaps from elsewhere he can pour light. Meanwhile of the following African martyrs Paul is recognized as the standard-bearer: but the other three or four we would reduce to the third order soon to be brought forward, were they not separated from them in the ancient Martyrologies.
