ON SS. VIGILANTIUS AND NUNDINUS, MARTYRS IN MACEDONIA,

Commentary

Vigilantius, martyr in Macedonia. (S.)

Nundinus, martyr in Macedonia. (S.)

One exemplar of the martyrology, that of Echternach, reckons these martyrs: In Macedonia of Vigilantius and Nundinus. In the exemplars of Bern, Corbie and Lucca, in place of the names of these martyrs a certain dedication is written in this way: that of Bern, In Macedonia the dedication of the basilica of James and John the Apostles. That of Lucca: In Macedonia the dedication of James and John the Apostle. That of Corbie: In Macedonia of Basilis of James, and St. John the Evangelist. And it is indeed worthy of note that in all in the same place, namely after the same saints have been reckoned, there follows In Macedonia etc.; only that of Corbie interposes Eustachius with his wife and sons. But since today this similarity of names returns four times, Macedonia, Macedonius, Macedo, we are rightly led into the suspicion of corruption. The Basilis which occurs in that of Corbie seems to have rushed in in place of basilica.
