ON SS. SEVERUS AND COMPANIONS: ANDRONA, THEODOTUS, AND THEODOTA, MARTYRS,

Commentary

Severus, martyr. (S.)

Androna, martyr. (S.)

Theodotus, martyr. (S.)

Theodata, martyr. (S.)

In honour of these martyrs the metrical Martyrology of the Greeks offers the following distich, from the menaia:

Συμμάρτυς ἔστω καὶ γυνὴ τοῖς ἀνδράσι,

Τετμημένοις τέσσαρσι συντετμημένη.

So be a fellow martyr with the men, O woman!

Slain together with the four who were slain.

In the title we have set 3 men and one woman as martyrs, because in the menology of Sirleto only these four are found, but in the menaia a fourth man is added,

named Dasius, so that according to the Greek distich, with Dasius, Severus, Androna and Theodotus, four men, the woman Theodota is joined in fifth place.
