Commentary

Euriela, virgin, in Armorica. (S.)

Of Blessed Euriela, virgin, I find nothing except the few things which Lobineau relates in the Saints of Armorican Brittany. He writes of her on page 157. I render his French words in Latin: St. Euriela was the sister of St. Judicael, king of Armorica. No Acts remain to us by which we may be taught the particular deeds of her life. Her name is written in the genealogy of St. Judicael, and her sanctity is confirmed by the ancient cult with which she is honoured in the province. Near Tremeur and the priory of St. George, not very far from Dinan, is seen a parish church of the diocese of Dol, whose name is St. Euriela's: and an ancient Calendar of the church of St. Méen announces the festival of this Saint on the 1st day of October. It calls her a virgin and sister of the holy king Judicael: but reduces the solemnity to a simple commemoration. The words of the cited Calendar

are these, after the announced feast of St. Remigius: Likewise. Commemoration of Euriela, virgin, sister of St. Judicael. The cited writer in the History of Armorican Brittany likewise makes mention of St. Euriela, sister of St. Judicael; but adds nothing to what has just been given: nor have I anything else to add.

Support the Translation

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through September are done, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
