ON SS. LEONTIUS, DOMITIUS, TERENTIUS, AND DOMNINUS, MARTYRS, VENERATED BY THE GREEKS,
AT AN UNCERTAIN TIME.
SYLLOGE.
Leontius, martyr, as it seems, in Greece. (S.)
Domitius, martyr, as it seems, in Greece. (S.)
Terentius, martyr, as it seems, in Greece. (S.)
Domninus, martyr, as it seems, in Greece. (S.)
[Saints Leontius, Domitius, Terentius, and Domninus, known from the metrical Martyrology alone.] The metrical Martyrology of the Greek Church, edited by Siber and collected from the great Menæa of the Greeks, displays a sacred little handful on today's date, of which no other Martyrologist, so far as we know, makes mention: so that here there is room for that assertion of Siber by which, in his preface, he notes that a most complete memory of the Greek Martyrs is displayed in this metrical Martyrology, such that those whom all the other writers know nothing of are found here only and uniquely. Now these Greek Saints (for they are to be reckoned Greeks on the evidence of their cult) have these Latin names: Leontius, Domitius, Terentius, and Domninus; concerning whom you have these little verses in the praised book:
Τρεῖς Λεόντιε τοὺς συναθλοῦντας ἔχων, Λεόντιόν τι τῆς πυρᾶς ἅλλῃ μέσον.
Leontius has three fellow-soldiers, rushing like a lion into the flames of the pyre.
And this memory of the holy Martyrs, drawn from the metrical Martyrology, is the only document we have which does not allow them to be consigned by us to oblivion.
