Tascius and Dubitatus and Valentus and Donatus

The ancient Martyrology which Florentinius published under the name of St. Jerome records the birthday of these four saints on this day, in Africa, in the city of Toniza. The same place is written in Achery, volume 4, in the Martyrology which is distinguished by the name of St. Jerome the presbyter, page 670; but the names of the saints are there formed in a different manner, namely: The birthday of the saints Tuscia, Dubitatus, Valentius, Donata. Florentinius in his notes on this day observes these things: The Antwerp Martyrology alone retains Tascia for Tascius: in the rest it agrees with our books, save that the name of the city Toniza is passed over. Florentinius had immediately before set down these words: The Corbie Martyrology writes Tuscia for Tascius, and Donata for Donatus. But treating of the place, he says: Toniza I have not hitherto found among the geographers as a city in Africa: unless perhaps it be the Toneisa of Antoninus, or the Thinissa of Ptolemy, or the Tunis of more recent writers in Africa proper.
