Rufus and Rufianus

The memory of these Saints Of SS. Rufus and Rufianus the martyrs the Greeks hand down few things, and these Baronius adopted in the Roman Martyrology after Galesinius. The printed Menæa announce those Saints at the VIII of September in this manner: Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ οἱ ἅγιοι αὐτάδελφοι, Ῥῦφος καὶ Ῥυφιανὸς ξίφει τελειοῦνται. On the same day the holy brothers german, Rufus and Rufianus, are crowned by the sword. Presently follow these little verses:

> Κλίνων ἑαυτὸν Ῥυφιανὸς τῷ ξίφει > Μένω σε, φησὶ, Ῥῦφε· μὴ μέλης ὅπου. > > Rufianus, bowing himself to the sword, > I await thee, he says, Rufus: delay not in any wise.

In the Sirletian Menology at the IX of September these things are read: On the same day the contest of the saints Rufus and Rufianus, who, being brothers german, were struck with the sword for the confession of the Christian faith. Hence Baronius on the same day in the Roman Martyrology: Likewise of the holy martyrs Ruffinus and Ruffinianus, brothers. The names of these Saints are somewhat corrupted by Baronius: and for that cause Ferrari on the preceding day doubts in some measure whether Baronius meant to designate the same men. But that is to doubt of a clear and certain matter, since Baronius himself notes that they are found on the same day in the Menology.
