"In Spain, the apparition of the blessed Virgin Mary, who gave herself to be seen by Sts. Peter Nolasco and Raymond of Peñafort and by James the first, king of Aragon, so that the Order of blessed Mary of Mercy for the Redemption of Captives might be founded," is the present-day announcement of the Roman Martyrology; but the feast has now been transferred and fixed on 24 September: it is further to be deferred to the work on the Festivities of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to be elaborated in its time. Meanwhile, however, what was said of that institution on the occasion of St. Peter Nolasco at the day 29 January can be seen.
St. Amator is marked in our Florarium in these words: "At Troyes, the natal day of St. Amator, first bishop of the same city," as he is also proclaimed by the Sainte-Marthe brothers and by the writers of Troyes. He ought to belong to the first day of May, on which see in the Acta what has been disputed about St. Amator, notably page 52, as also among the Passed Over on the same day, 1 May.
Sts. Macarius and Julius are ineptly placed on this day in Syria by Maurolycus, with no guide that I know of. He was without doubt ignorant that they are Martyrs of the most celebrated class of the XLVIII of Lyons, expressly named, who were long since illustrated by our predecessors, 2 June.
The translation of Sts. Monulph and Gondulph is marked on this day by Greven and by our Ms. Florarium of the Saints. Of this, with the natal day of both, treatment was given on 16 July.
St. John, surnamed the Lamb, bishop of Maastricht, I know not why is entered on this day by Greven, and from him by Canisius, and again by Ferrarius, who had rightly marked him on the true natal day, on which we treated of him, 25 July.
The Seven Holy Sleepers have been wrongly marked on this day in various Usuardine auctaria, and in that of Pulsano indeed with four other anonymous ones. Their natal day, on which treatment of them was given, is very well known, 27 July.
A certain St. Maleus is known by name alone in some Catalogues of the Irish Saints, but nowhere else has a whit been found so far by which one could come to a knowledge of his age, condition or deeds; if this is suggested, a place will not be lacking elsewhere in which to treat of him.
Jerome de Aptis, of the Order of Preachers, is praised by Lucenti in the Fulgor Fulginii for the vigil or feast of St. Lawrence with a double eulogy, and not without the title of Blessed, which I shall readily and gladly grant him when his lawful cult has been established.
Sister Catherine Atayde is called by Marchese not indeed Blessed, but deservedly a servant of God.
Others besides of the same Order are entered on this very day among the Blessed or the Venerable in the small French Dominican Year, lately brought here, as
Ambrose Woinicz, martyr in the province of Russia, of the convent of Kiev, slain by the Tartars in the year 1648.
The Venerable Fr. Thomas Cajetan, confessor, General of the Order and afterwards Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, who is said to have died in the year 1533.
Nazarena Villana of Florence, of the third Order, is proclaimed as adorned with many virtues, especially charity and mercy towards the poor, whom the Belgian Annus sanctus and the German Viridarium also praise.
Justinian of Bergamo, of the Camaldolese Order, on Monte Santa Corona, is adorned in a wonderful manner by Bucelinus on this day among his Benedictine Saints. We wonder that nothing about him has reached us from elsewhere so far.
"At Metz, the deposition of St. Epilecius, bishop and confessor," is read on this day in our Ms. Florarium of the Saints; whence it was received it has not yet been possible to explore. I know of an Epletius or Expletius, bishop, in the Sainte-Marthe brothers, thirteenth in order, but I wish to be informed about his true natal day and lawful cult.
Cathan, bishop in the island of Bute, our predecessors referred from 17 May to 19 July, or to this 10th day of August: we, further, finding nothing about him on the said 19 July, deferred the matter hither for examination. But all things now having been duly weighed, those considerations do not occur which would claim him for the Saints: for neither in the Breviary of Aberdeen nor in the approved Catalogues of the Saints does he obtain a place anywhere. As for George Newton being cited by Dempster and Camerarius in the Life of St. Blane, he is not at hand, nor, if he were present, would he contribute anything to the sanctity of Cathan or to his cult. The few things that are found about him in the lessons of St. Blane contribute nothing much to that, so that other things are needed before a place can be granted him in this work; and if these are suggested from anywhere, treatment of him can be given on any other day, since the true one is unknown.
Laurence, Cistercian lay brother, is praised among the Pious by Saussay in the addition to his Gallican Martyrology: Henriquez and Chalemot, a little more liberal, add the title of Blessed. Indeed he is also entered in the Cistercian Kalendar: when his lawful cult has been established, a place will be due to him in this work.
By the same there is also marked with an eulogy Guy, first a monk of the same Order, who, labouring strenuously in Aquitaine, reconciled very many Albigensians to the Church; then, created bishop of Carcassonne, he was illustrious for a great fame of sanctity. But I do not yet find that he was lawfully celebrated with ecclesiastical cult.
John Pistor, Carthusian of Ghent, Raissius deservedly proclaims Venerable on this day in the Auctarium to the Natales of the Saints of Belgium, enumerating some remarkable virtues of his.
Simon of Assisi, confessor, at Brufortium in Picenum; Thomas a Curia, confessor, in France; Anthony the Corsican, confessor, near Montecasale in Umbria; Adriana, Tertiary, at Cortona: these are honoured with the title of Blessed by Arthur in the Franciscan Martyrology.
There are added by Hueber, slain in Hungary for the faith, but without a title:
Andrew Galgozius.
Leonard of Aravia.
Peter Miscolotius.
Thomas of Bassa.
Stephen of Pelsium.
George of Valcamonica in Insubria.
Giles of Monferrato, in the same place.
John the German, in the same place.
Bonaventure of Cremona, in the same place.
Andrew of Grosseto at Navis in Tuscany.
Paschal of Castaletum at Moronum in Apulia.
Peter of Perugia at Biturgia in Umbria.
Louis at Fonte Salita in the West Indies.
Bonaventure of Agrigento in Sicily.
Laura Felix de Saulis at Milan in Lombardy.
Maria Carnimolla in Sicily.
The Ms. Additions of the Charterhouse of Brussels to Greven add on this day: "Elsewhere it is said: at the greater monastery of the Meuse, the deposition of St. Victor, confessor, bishop of Trier." They meant to say Auctor, of whom treatment is given on this day.
James, John and Abraham, likewise Entheus and Acrates, Castellanus took on this day from the Ethiopian Fasti of Job Ludolf, which is quite habitual with him on other days too: we have already said more than once that Saints of this kind are not admitted by us unless they have long since been recorded in other approved Latin or Greek Martyrologies or Menologies.
The memory of the holy martyr Euplus is found in the Typicon which is cited under the name of St. Sabas; to which add the Menologium collected by order of the emperor Basil. We shall treat of him with the Roman Martyrology on the day 12 August.
"Among the Salentini, the commemoration of the blessed martyrs Stephen, bishop of Otranto, Fabius Calcearius and DCCCXII others slain by the Turks for the faith of Christ," is that of Ferrarius in the general Catalogue; of whom he observes in the notes that they are not yet venerated with an ecclesiastical Office, although they have some veneration among the inhabitants. So Ferrarius spoke of his own time; but that veneration afterwards so increased that their festivity is solemnly kept, not on this day, but on that on which they suffered, 14 August.
St. Mederic, abbot, namely at one time of Autun, Bollandus found wrongly drawn back hither in a Benedictine Kalendar; he is better noted by others, with the Roman, on the day on which we shall treat of him, 29 August.
Among the several aberrations of today in our Ms. Florarium of the Saints let the announcement of Sts. Justus and Amicus, bishops of Lyons, also have a place. Of these I had to treat at sufficient length among the Passed Over on 14 July, where I referred the several difficulties occurring about them for examination to the day 2 September.
Noticed an error, have a suggestion, or want to share a thought? Let me know.
