"At Messina, in the monastery of Montevergine, the showing of the sacred and incorrupt body of Bl. Eustochium, Virgin, abbess and foundress of that monastery," is noted in the Sicilian Martyrology of Ottavio Caietano. This virgin has a place among the Passed Over with us on the day 20 January.
The consecration of the church of St. Dominic of Foligno is found on this day in his Life, which Jacobilli brought to light in the year 1645, chapter 8, page 40. The Life of this Saint was illustrated on the day 22 January: where, in the Commentary prefixed to the same Life, page 442, number 2, mention is made of the dedication of his church, at the same day, 22 January.
St. Bernard, or Barnard, in the Gallia Christiana of Claude Robert, among the archbishops of Vienne, is written to have been buried on the 11th (that is, XI) day before the Kalends of September. Of this holy Prelate treatment was given with us on the day 23 January; where on page 544 it is indicated that this seems an error. Go to the same day, 23 January.
"The translation of the bodies of the saints Hilary, bishop and confessor, Innocent, martyr, and St. Peregrinus, bishop and martyr, in the basilica of St. Denis," is given among the Auctaria to our Usuard from the Brussels codex. To which in the same place, from the codex of the Queen of Sweden, the name of Patroclus is added. Of St. Hilary, the most celebrated bishop of Poitiers, we treated on the day 13 January; of St. Peregrinus, martyr and bishop of Auxerre, on the day 16 May; of St. Innocent or Innocentius, bishop of Le Mans, on the day 19 June. Patrocli, moreover, we have given elsewhere, namely a bishop and martyr of Troyes in France on the day 21 January; in the same place, among the Passed Over, an archbishop of Arles; likewise a bishop and martyr in France on the 31st of the same month. Besides, on the Patrocli the index of the Saints of Castellanus to the universal Martyrology which he published can be consulted. Let the days 23 January, 16 May, etc., therefore be seen.
"At Rome, of Timothy, disciple of St. Paul the Apostle": mention is made in the Martyrology of Rheinau, and in Fiorentini in the text of the Martyrology which he brought to light. More can be seen in the same place in his notes, and in what will be disputed at length on this day with us about St. Timothy, Roman martyr. But of him who was the disciple of St. Paul the Apostle we treated long since at 24 January.
"At Camera of blessed Mary" (it is a Cistercian convent of nuns in Brabant near Brussels) "blessed Godfrey, monk and confessor of the same monastery." This is the announcement of Manrique in the Cistercian Menologium. Among the other praises of him which he subjoins, he gives him the title of holy Man; that it befits him in the strict sense ought to be proved. Of this Godfrey mention is made with us among the Passed Over at the day 12 June, and 3 March: of whom Saussay too treats on this day, 22 August; but he marks him after the text of the others, and in smaller letters. What has been said at the days 3 March and 12 June can therefore be seen.
"At Chartres, the memory of St. Leoninus, bishop," is celebrated today in our Ms. Florarium. But of this holy bishop of Chartres, who is sometimes called Leoninus, and mostly Leobinus or Leubinus, our predecessors treated at sufficient length at the day 14 March.
St. Musa, Virgin, at Rome, is noted in Whitford. Castellanus, in the Index of the Saints of his universal Martyrology, marks Musa, praised by St. Gregory the Great, in smaller Roman type, as venerable, and indicates her as omitted; as one who did not sufficiently know her. For she is given with us on 2 April.
Mention of another St. Macharius (for we also give one among the Passed Over on this day), who was a monk of the monastery of St. Bavo at Ghent, is made in the Kalendar of the Saints of the Order of St. Benedict which we have from the Ms. of the monastery of St. Saviour, of the Cistercian Order. See the day on which the Acts of St. Macarius have been illustrated with us, 10 April.
Lambert, abbot of Chézery in England, with the title of blessed, is found in the Cistercian Menologium in Henriquez, and with an eulogy: in which, since he says that, illustrious for virtues, he died most piously, he seems tacitly to indicate that a cult in the strict sense is not due to him. He was, however, the brother of St. Peter, archbishop of Tarentaise, and mention is made of him in the Life of the aforesaid Peter with us on the day 8 May, chapter 1, volume 2 of that month, page 324 and the following. Saussay also makes mention of Lambert at the day 22 August; but he marks him after the text of the others, and in smaller letters. See 8 May.
Mention of Hymbert of blessed memory, of the Order of Preachers, is found in the Ms. Additions of the Charterhouse of Brussels to Greven's Usuard. If Humbert, the fifth General of the Order of Preachers, is meant here, consult the Passed Over at the day 14 June. But if another, the title of blessed memory seems sufficiently to indicate that a public cult in the strict sense does not befit him. The day 14 June can therefore be consulted.
Osanna, virgin, is announced on this day in our Ms. Florarium. But we cannot divine which she is among the others of the same name: for Castellanus in his universal Martyrology, among the ahemeri, page 828, makes mention of a twofold Osanna, both of whom seem to have neither a lawful cult nor a certain day of death. If the compiler of the Florarium meant to indicate Bl. Osanna, virgin of Mantua, treatment of her was long since given copiously in our Work at the day 18 June.
St. Grumbert, confessor, is also entered on this day in our Ms. Florarium. We know no Saint of this kind, unless perhaps his name has been corrupted from Gumbert, the Acts of which confessor have been illustrated, as far as could be done, on the day 15 July.
The announcement of Bl. Walter, of the Order of Minors, disciple of St. Francis, is placed by Ferrarius on this day at Alenquer in Portugal. We gave him on the day 2 August.
"In Germany, the deposition of Eberhard, first abbot of the monastery of Einsiedeln, and confessor," with the title of Saint and an eulogy. These things have been extracted from the Benedictine Menologium of Bucelinus. But since his public cult is no more established for us now than before, we send the reader to the Passed Over on the day 14 August.
The contest of the holy martyr Leucius of Cyrene occurs in our Ms. Sirmond-Chifflet supplement to the Greek Menaea published in print, with a brief narrative of the martyrdom. In the Roman Martyrology he is called Lucius, and we gave him with the same Martyrology at the day 20 August.
Heydenric, abbot of Blessed Mary of Sedlec, is noted with the title of blessed in the Series of the Saints, Blessed and illustrious men of the Cistercian Order in Chalemot, who after death merited, as he adds, to be enrolled in the Menologium among the illustrious Cistercian men. See what was said of him among the Passed Over on the day 21 August.
The two Arwald princes of the island of Vecta (commonly Wight in England) are noted in the Ms. collection of the Saints from various sacred Fasti which is with us. Consult what was said of them yesterday among the Passed Over, 21 August.
Of the holy martyrs Timothy and Proterius Peter Equilinus makes mention today in the Catalogue of the Saints, book 7, chapter 92, whom certain more recent Martyrologists have followed. The title of martyr rightly befits St. Proterius, whose Acts our predecessors laboriously illustrated on the day 28 February. But we do not see how either martyrdom in the strict sense or public cult can be attributed to Timothy, prelate of Alexandria. Let the reader go to the Passed Over at the day on which we treated of both these Prelates, 21 August.
"Of Bl. Bernard, abbot, founder of the Order of Monte Oliveto," is noted at Siena in the New Catalogue of the Saints in Ferrarius. This Blessed was illustrated with us yesterday, 21 August.
Humbeline, sister of St. Bernard, foundress of the Cistercian nuns, is placed in the Cistercian Kalendar, which was printed at Dijon in the year 1617, and in the Series of the Saints etc. of the same Order in Chalemot, with an eulogy. Go to what we said of her among the Passed Over at yesterday's day, 21 August.
The Octave of the Assumption of the blessed Virgin Mary is noted in the Roman Martyrology; of which various other Latin Fasti also make mention. See the Auctaria to the Martyrology of Usuard published by us, on this day.
The announcement of Macharius, first abbot of St. James at Würzburg, with the title of saint, is placed in the Kalendar of the Saints of the Order of St. Benedict, of which we have a copy from the Ms. of the house of St. Saviour, of the Cistercian Order. Castellanus, in the Supplement to the ahemeri, page 923 of his universal Martyrology, gives him the title of venerable, and adds that he was the first abbot of St. Kilian's at Würzburg, where he is named blessed. We wish to be made more certain of his public and lawful cult.
"At Bedford in England, St. Arnulph, bishop," is announced today in Wilson's English Martyrology, and Saussay in the Supplement of the Gallican Martyrology, volume 1, page 1160, at the day 22 August, has the following about him: "The translation of St. Arnulph, bishop, whose body they relate was carried from France into England, and laid at Bedford." Our Alford in the Annals of the English church at the year of Christ 890, number 18, doubts who this Arnulph is, and at the end of that year writes thus of him: "Let others dispute whether he was a bishop from France, or truly sprung of British blood, born and dead in England." It seems therefore from the Martyrology of Saussay that this is the day of the translation. When the English suggest the day of death and more distinct information about this bishop, treatment of him will be possible elsewhere.
"Quentin Kennedy sought heavenly things, brother of the Earl of Cassilis, and abbot of Crossraguel, who, after various encounters with the heretics, and having overcome his enemies in public disputation, was carried off by the followers of hell with a poisoned cup, and exchanged life for death in the year of Christ MDLXIV. Of him there are many and most learned monuments on the dogmas of the faith": as Camerarius says in the Menologium of the Scots.
Μνήμη τῆς βασιλίσσης Ἀριάδνης, that is, "The memory of queen Ariadne," is noted in the Synaxarion of Sirmond. A martyr of the same name in Phrygia the Roman Martyrology marks on the day 17 September, and the Menologium of Sirleto: but on the 18th of the same month the great Menaea, which record that she was a handmaid. Today's, who was a queen, the wife of a prince, or an empress (for βασίλισσα signifies these things), I have not sufficiently ascertained.
"At Antioch, the natal day of St. Marinus." This is the announcement of the Hieronymian Martyrology which Fiorentini published. The same is repeated in his notes on it; but I find no light there by which I may be led to a further knowledge of that martyr.
Lucina Margaret of Soncino in Lombardy is noted with the title of blessed in the Holy Year of the Order of Preachers, printed at Antwerp in Flemish in the year 1675; of whom also the Viridarium of the same Order, published at Cologne in the German tongue in the year 1676 by Friedrich Steill.
Dominic, among the Tartars; Twenty-five Brothers, in an island near Cyprus; an Anonymous one, at Rimini: these are in the Martyrology of Arthur with the title of blessed and martyrs.
Giles de Capotiis, at Assisi in Umbria; Francis of Florence, at Fiesole in Tuscany; John, Tertiary, at Urbino; Peter of Turreionzillum, in Castile: these are there with the title of blessed confessors.
Quilisinda, virgin, in the diocese of Meaux; Sicchedis, Virgin, abbess, at Alciacum in the diocese of Thérouanne; Maria of the Assumption, Virgin, Poor Clare, at Alenquer in the territory of Lisbon; Armezana, Virgin, abbess, of the Cistercian Order, in the diocese of Calahorra; Hadriana, Franciscan Tertiary, at Cortona: these can be added in the Gynaeceum of Arthur; the second with the title of saint, the others are called blessed.
Gabriel of St. Mary, named otherwise by others, among the Ruteni in France; Francis Pallonius, at Venice; James of St. Nicholas, in Castile; Joseph Albizius, in the same place; Francis of Belvisio, at Coria; Louis of Fabriano, on the Holy Mount; Louis of Parma, at Caracicum; John of Pergola, no place added; John of Terranova, at Galatro in Italy: these are recorded by Hueber in the Franciscan Menologium.
Vitalis, otherwise Vitus, first bishop of Lithuania, is indicated with the title of blessed, with an eulogy, in Friedrich Steill in the Viridarium of the sacred Order of Preachers.
"Of St. Apollinaris, martyr, who saw the glory of St. Timothy, and therefore caused himself to be baptized, and was beheaded with Timothy": the codex of Hagenau makes mention of him on this day among the Auctaria to our Usuard, after the announcement of St. Timothy, Roman or Ostian martyr, who will be given by us on this day. But that it has confused him with the one of the same name of Reims will be made plain from what will be said tomorrow about the holy martyrs of Reims Timothy and Apollinaris, 23 August.
Bl. Richildis, virgin, at Summontorium near Innsbruck, is placed in Castellanus in the Additions to his universal Martyrology on this day; but elsewhere treatment of her is given on the next following day, to which we too defer her, then to examine whether her true and lawful cult is sufficiently established. Go therefore to the same day, 23 August.
"Of St. Eusebius, and the commemoration of Lupus, martyr," is noted in the collectanea of the Saints which are with us. See the next following day of this month, 23 August.
The deposition of Bl. James de Blanconibus (otherwise called of Bevagna), with an eulogy, is ascribed to the additions in the Molanus published in the year 1568: of whom treatment is also given in the Martyrology commonly named that of Canisius. His Acts will be illustrated on 23 August.
"In Gaul, in the city of Autun, the natal day of the saints Medard and Aemilian with their eight sons," as is read in the Auctaria of our illustrated Usuard. But it is a manifest error of the copyist, which came forth from a corrupt Hieronymian codex, where the city of Gaul and the two first names of the Martyrs have been wrongly changed, as will be evident from the day on which we shall treat of them, 23 August.
"At Ostia, the natal day of the saints Quyriacus and Archelaus": the memory is noted in the Auctaria to our Usuard among the things which were taken from Molanus, on this day: but they are found in the Roman Martyrology on the next following day, where it is said in the notes: "Their deeds are narrated in the Acts of St. Aurea, who is found in the same Martyrology on the 24th of this month." See therefore more of them on 23 and 24 August.
St. Eptadius at Montelon in the diocese of Autun is inscribed in the universal Martyrology in Castellanus with the title of martyr. Go to the day on which we shall treat of this Saint, 24 August.
"At Sens, the commemoration of St. Ebbo, archbishop," with an eulogy, is inscribed in the Benedictine Menologium in Bucelinus. But Castellanus enters him on another day, on which it can be seen what is due to him, namely 27 August.
The holy martyrs Irenaeus, Or and Orepsis are in the great printed Menaea and elsewhere among the Greeks, and in the universal Martyrology of Castellanus. But we shall give them on the day on which they are marked in the Basilian Synaxarion, with us, 30 August.
"In Scotland, the memory of St. Barr, bishop," is found in Ferrarius, from the Scottish Menologium and the Martyrology of Canisius, as is added in the notes, and book 2 of the Scottish History is cited. In the Martyrology commonly called that of Canisius, which was published in the German tongue at Dillingen in the year 1599, he is noted in Ireland on the day 25 (in place of which the day 26 is wrongly printed there) September. On the same 25th day likewise, and in the same place, he occurs among the Auctaria to our Usuard. But in the Scottish Menologium of Dempster he is announced on the day 23 August, and on 24 September. We therefore defer this bishop to the said day, 25 September.
"At Rome, of St. Maurus, monk and martyr under the emperor Numerian," is marked by Ferrarius in the New catalogue of the Saints; of whom also Galesinius. He is in the Roman Martyrology on 22 November.
The annual festivity of the holy martyrs Justus and Habundius is marked on this day in our Ms. Florarium. Treatment of these two Martyrs will have to be given with the Roman Martyrology on the day 14 December.
Noticed an error, have a suggestion, or want to share a thought? Let me know.
