ON SAINTS CYRIACUS, VALERIA, MARCIA, DIOGENES, AND MICA

MARTYRS IN AFRICA

From the Hieronymian Martyrology and other ancient ones.

Commentary

Cyriacus, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Valeria, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Marcia, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Diogenes, Martyr in Africa (S.)

Mica, Martyr in Africa (S.)

G. H.

The ancient transcripts of the Hieronymian Martyrology

begin the 16th day with these

Saints: concerning whom

in the most ancient Epternach copy these things

are read, on the 16th of the Kalends of July:

"In Africa, the feast of Cyriacus, Valeria,

Marcia, Diogenes, Mica." But, the first being omitted,

the rest are set forth in the other three transcripts, the Lucca, the Corbie,

and the Blume, in this order:

"In Africa, the feast of Diogenes, Mica, Valeria, Marcia."

In the Barberini Ms. three are thus reported:

"In Africa the birthday of Saints Diogenes, Valeria,

Marcia." The Aachen Ms. has thus: "In

Africa, the feast of Quiricus, Valeria, Marcia, Diogenes."

The Mss. of Reichenau and Rheinau: "In

Africa, the feast of Quiriacus, Valeria." The Ms. of Ado of the monastery

of St. Lawrence at Liège, and the Ms. Florarium:

"In Africa the birthday of Saints Diogenes and

Valeria." The memory of Diogenes alone is celebrated

in the Florentine Mss. of the Grand Duke and of the Senator

Strozzi, likewise in the Mss. of Augsburg the copy of St. Udalric,

of Brussels the copy of St. Gudula, of Paris the copy of Labbe, of Gellone the copy

of St. William of the Desert, and another of St. Gall

in Helvetia (Switzerland).

ON SAINTS SATURNINUS AND CENDENUS

MARTYRS AT MESSINA IN SICILY

From the same more ancient Martyrologies.

Commentary

Saturninus, Martyr, at Messina in Sicily (S.)

Cendenus, Martyr, at Messina in Sicily (S.)

G. H.

This pair of Martyrs is celebrated in the second place

in the aforecited four

ancient transcripts of the Hieronymian Martyrology,

and in the most ancient

Epternach copy in these words:

"In the Sicilian city of Messina,

the feast of Saturninus, Cendinus." In the transcripts of Lucca

and Blume: "In Sicily, the feast of Saturninus,

Cendenus." In the Corbie copy printed at Paris: "In

the Sicilian city, the feast of Saturninus, Cendeus." But the Ms.

of Reichenau in Swabia has thus, "[In] the Sicilian city of Messina,

the feast of Saturninus, Cendenus." In the Ms. of Rheinau

Cendenus is omitted, but the rest agree with

the preceding. But the wrestling-ground (palaestra) being omitted, the memory

of Saturninus is held in the Florentine Mss.

of the Grand Duke and of the Senator Strozzi. Likewise in

the Mss. of Aachen, of Augsburg, of Gellone, and

of Paris.
