ON SAINTS SATURNINUS AND CENDENUS MARTYRS AT MESSINA IN SICILY

From the same more ancient Martyrologies.

Commentary

Saturninus, Martyr, at Messina in Sicily (S.)

Cendenus, Martyr, at Messina in Sicily (S.)

G. H.

This pair of Martyrs is celebrated in the second place in the aforecited four ancient transcripts of the Hieronymian Martyrology, and in the most ancient Epternach copy in these words: "In the Sicilian city of Messina, the feast of Saturninus, Cendinus." In the transcripts of Lucca and Blume: "In Sicily, the feast of Saturninus, Cendenus." In the Corbie copy printed at Paris: "In the Sicilian city, the feast of Saturninus, Cendeus." But the Ms. of Reichenau in Swabia has thus, "[In] the Sicilian city of Messina, the feast of Saturninus, Cendenus." In the Ms. of Rheinau Cendenus is omitted, but the rest agree with the preceding. But the wrestling-ground (palaestra) being omitted, the memory of Saturninus is held in the Florentine Mss. of the Grand Duke and of the Senator Strozzi. Likewise in the Mss. of Aachen, of Augsburg, of Gellone, and of Paris.
