ON SS. CRISTATUS AND COMPANIONS: PETER, MAMMERUS, SATURNINUS, AND MAGNUS, MARTYRS,
CommentaryCristatus, martyr at Melitene. (S.)
Peter, martyr at Melitene. (S.)
Mammerus, martyr at Melitene. (S.)
Saturninus, martyr at Melitene. (S.)
Magnus, martyr at Melitene. (S.)
The Hieronymian martyrology of the Echternach codex enumerates four of the aforesaid martyrs, excepting only Magnus, and affirms that they suffered at Melitia. For Melitia Fiorentini judges that Melitina should be written In the notes at the Kalends of Nov., for reasons not to be despised. Although in Thessaly there occurs Melitaea Pliny, Natural History, book IV, 16.: which, since in Greek it is written both Μελίτεια and Μελίταια, could be called in Latin Melitia. Those of Lucca and Bern have three, omitting Cristatus and Magnus, that of Corbie four, omitting Magnus. That we have set down Magnus with the others, no other reason moved us except the Corbie text, which reckoned him in a continuous series with three others. Cristatus or Cristas, who occurs only in the Echternach, could perhaps be held to be the same man or woman as Ristha from the number of those of Terracina.
