ON SS. JANUARIUS AND COMPANIONS: VITALIS, PETER, CRESCENTIUS, VICTORINUS, AND MACROTUS, MARTYRS,
CommentaryJanuarius, martyr. (S.)
Vitalis, martyr. (S.)
Peter, martyr. (S.)
Crescentius, martyr. (S.)
Victorinus, martyr. (S.)
Macrotus, martyr. (S.)
These martyrs are reckoned in the Hieronymian tables, but not all in each. For Crescentius all write Crescens or Criscens. Macrotus we find only in the Echternach codex. Here for you are the various series: In that of Bern, And elsewhere of the saints Januarius, Vitalis, Peter, Criscens, Victorinus, martyr. That of Lucca agrees with that of Bern. In that of Corbie: And elsewhere the natal day of Sts. Januarius, Peter, Crescens, Victorinus and other martyrs. Which other martyrs seem to be Vitalis and Macrotus. In that of Echternach: And elsewhere of Januarius, Vitalis, Peter, Crescens, Victorinus, Macrotus. Of whom Victorinus is perhaps that man, celebrated for doctrine and martyrdom, whom Jerome praised, bishop of Pettau, of whom we shall treat on the following day. Among those of Terracina a certain Criscens has already been reckoned.
