ON ST. MELANTUS, MARTYR,
CommentaryMelantus, martyr. (S.)
BY G. V. H.
From the Lucca martyrology this martyr is absent, according to Fiorentini; but in the Gallic additions, as he calls them, one reads in this order: In the city of Langres, at the fortress of Dijon, of Benignus, Primus, martyr, and St. Mary, martyr, and St. Melantus. That of Corbie thus: At the fortress of Dijon the passion of St. Benignus, presbyter and martyr, and of St. Melantus. Whence one might suspect that this Melantus belongs to Langres; but in that of Echternach it is otherwise: And elsewhere of St. Mary and St. Melantus. And that of Bern mentions no Melantus, but in place of Melantus has the name Marte, namely: And elsewhere of St. Mary and Marte.
