BY J. B.

The Martyrs whom I named in the first place the Lucca and Corbie Hieronymian codices in Fiorentini ascribe to Africa: but the Echternach one passes them over. The Lucca one has thus: In Africa of Rogatus. Saturninus. Faustinus. Januarius. and Martial. Thus the Corbie: In Africa of Rogatus, Saturninus, Januarius, Faustinus, Martial. To these are added, among the Supplements to Bede, the Vatican codex and that of St. Cyriacus in volume 2 of March, which have thus: And in Africa of Rogatus, Saturninus, Januarius, Faustinus * and Martial. Of Rogatus alone (I do not know whether the same or a different one) the Usuardine Supplements of Anchin, Cluny, the Altemps and the Lübeck-Cologne, in Sollerius, likewise make mention at this day, but without place: while Belinus and Molanus give Rogatus the title of bishop; the Altemps and the Lübeck-Cologne edition of Usuard, that of Martyr. But the Anchin and Cluny report the bare name of Rogatus. And as regards those whom I named in the second place, of these Januarius is indeed ascribed to Africa in the Lucca and Corbie Martyrologies together with Rogatus and the others marked in the first place: but whether he is to be ascribed to Africa with them or to Rome with Ammonus, the Echternach codex compels me to doubt, in which he is announced together with Ammonus at Rome in this manner: At Rome, of Januarius, of Ammonus the priest. Further, the Lucca and Corbie codices join Ammonus to Marcellus, Castus, Aemilius and Saturninus in Apulia; but since in these Apulia seems to be placed by error for Capua, as was said above, I think that Ammonus more probably suffered at Rome according to the Echternach codex. This is certain, that none of the Martyrologies cited announces Ammonus with Marcellus and his Companions at Capua; and accordingly Galesini, when he joined with the Capuan martyrs Ammonus under the name, as it appears, of Antony, and Avitus, who does not appear today in our Hieronymian codices, most probably used depraved codices.

The Acta Sanctorum has never been available in English. This site is translating all of it: January through September are done, and the calendar runs to November 10, where the Bollandists stopped in 1940. The scholarship pipeline is built; what remains is a compute bill. Contributions go directly to translating more of the calendar.

The Acta was a funded enterprise for three centuries; the translation runs the same way. Everything here is free and stays free whether you give or not. Wroot Press is a small independent press — an imprint of Wroot Labs LLC, not a charity. Contributions aren't tax-deductible; they buy compute.
